Battle Flags and Bandwagons |
|
Here is a battle flag: "I will not 'Get over it!'"
Here is a bandwagon: "Clinton sold out the Democrats on Larry King."
In the first instance, the phrase "Get over it" has particular resonance for Democrats or democrats who believe the Bush selection was perhaps the lowest point of American democracy, because that is the phrase flung at us since December 13, 2000, flung at us on January 20, 2001 at the anti-inauguration in DC, flung at us to salt our wounds. "Bush stole the White House. Votes stopped counting. Democracy is dead. Get over it." This is a battle flag democrats must hold onto until they take back the ground the anti-democrats stole away: "I will not 'Get over it!'"
The second is a bandwagon, in my opinion. Some have argued fairly convincingly that Clinton dropped the flag when he called Bush "right" to admit a "mistake." I'm not convinced.
A battle flag is a sign of conviction. A bandwagon is something people jump on because it has momentum and they don't want to miss it.
