Poll question: which GOP Senator inspires the most contempt from you? |

So many worthy candidates and so hard to pick only one. But here are a few who come to mind.

He isn't nearly as bad as a lot of other Republicans. People just hate him because he was up against Paul Wellstone. You would all hate anyone who tried to beat Wellstone. Coleman is actually somewhat more moderate than most Republicans. He seems to care about the environment because he voted against drilling in ANWR. And when he gets more seniority I would think that he may very well end up being a potential swing vote in the Senate.

Yeah, just like Arlen "I voted for Pryor" Specter.
He seems to care about the environment because he voted against drilling in ANWR.
I remember that vote. I also remember him saying after the vote that if the Repuke leadership had needed his vote, he would have gone the other way. (The vote was 52-48.)
And when he gets more seniority I would think that he may very well end up being a potential swing vote in the Senate.
He's going to get 6 years of seniority. PERIOD.
Anybody who says that they're a "99% improvement over Wellstone" better have the voting record to back it up. Oh wait...isn't that impossible? :grr:

and so he would have an issue to trot out and look "moderate" on. My guess is for 6 years he'll vote with the extreme right 97% of the time and then bring out every time he voted against them to prove he's really moderate.
gah, one nightmare scenario is if Dayton loses in 2006 I could end up with a Coleman/Kennedy or Coleman/Kline or Coleman/Gutknecht or Coleman/Pawlenty senatorial combo. The thought of that is nauseating. But since Dayton was able to sink Grams he could probably also sink another far right shill if they decide to run one.

PS--Is that Kline wing-nut even from Minnesota or the mid-west originally? Just curious. I know the tuna sandwich (Norman) is from the east coast somewhere...

But now, I have to say it is a tie between Hatch and Santorum. I was watching Hatch the other day lying on Cspan, complaining about the judicial nominees (he has a real bee in his bonnet over this) and Democratic "obstruction". He was going on about it at length, saying this has never been done before, and it is unprecedented and more b.s. He forgets (not really, he just doesn't mention it) the repubs did the same thing to Clinton's nominees, but in a different fashion. They wouldn't let the ones they disliked out of committee, which the Dems can't do because they don't control the committees so their only recourse is to filibuster. Hatch is an ass.

She's very dangerous because she is perceived to be more moderate than the rest of them, as well as being a woman and capturing the votes of (some) women who feel that any woman would be better than a Dem man on so-called women's issues.
She's also a favorite of the Shrub administration and the repub leadership, and is probably being groomed for higher office, which means she could be around for years to come.

He is such a religious fanatic that it really bothers be. He said a few days ago that a good catholic believes in certain things. He was saying that judicial nominee Bill Pryor has to be opposed to abortion and homosexuality because he is catholic. It was really offensive to pro-choice catholics and particularly stupid because Jeff Sessions is Methodist so how does he know so much about catholicism.

Sessions is one of 'those kind of christians' the ones that hates catholics. I ought to know I was raised in the south and know all about those kind of fundamentalist zealots!
Senator Durbin spanked his ass though didn't he? I tell you the truth I'm worried about Durbin if there's a list he's on it, if you know what I mean?
I also wanted to vote for Sack O' poop Chambliss for what he did to Max.....

I'm not sure how Santorum got in. He doesn't seem representative of Pennsylvania, or even Pennsylvania Republicans (who seem less conservative than most Republicans). I don't know when he is up for re-election, but I doubt his seat is so strong that he can afford such extremist positions.

He was first elected in 1994 against Harris Wofford...that was 1994, where we lost practically every competitive race. In 2000, we ran Ron Klink, a pro-life Congressman from the western part of the state (Hart's district now). Klink ran no ads (at least none that I saw) in the Philadelphia area and proceeded to lose horribly. I endorsed Allyson Schwartz in the Dem primary, but it wasn't meant to be...

Probably the most blatant homophobe in the senate (even worse than Santorum) who threatened to filibuster Clinton's appointment of a gay ambassador, and ran in 1996 with anti-gay rights as one of his platform's planks. He also defended Milosevic on the basis that the Serbs were "trying to spread Christianity", told a rally that voting liberals out of office was "the Lord's work" and also has basically said that Israel can murder anyone they want on their land because God gave it to them. Truly one detestable person.
It also just so happens that the other senator from Oklahoma is the second worst senator.

What about Dr. Bill (Jekyl) Frist? By day he saves lives as a doctor, by night he ruins lives as a legislator. I also heard really bad things about Don Rickles of Ok (and I do not give a nickel for what his real name is), who was expected to be Lott's replacement. What I heard was enough to make me say - "keep Lott".
Personally, I hate Charles Grassley the most because he lied to me personally in correspondence (not that it was not a form letter or written by a staffer). I explained his lies to him, albeit somewhat harshly, and he wrote back "we will agree to disagree" and later he went through the same exchange with Paul Krugman. He seemed to be liar in chief for the Bush tax cuts.

But if I had to pick one it would be Norm Coleman, who did everything to win (except I don't believe he killed Wellstone, he isn't sharp enough to think up that one, Rove on the other had). He's also the most wishy-washy person possible, I have family in Minnesota, and they all say that he whined that he couldn't get ahead as a Democrat so he switched parties. The Georgia duo of Chambliss and Miller also incite inspire contempt. The absolute worst however has to be Bill Frist, I think while he was a doctor he may have accidently removed his own heart during an operation.
