Poll question: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Would you do it? |
|
Okay, so this is the new "Jim Carrey movie" done by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) and the original author of the story is Philip K. Dick, so good credentials behind the creative forces IMHO.
So, the plot of the story is this: A couple (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
Are there relationships you'd want to do this with?
I say no because every relationship lead me down a new path and who's to say if I didn't take it, my life would be somehow better. I'd be a different person and even through pain in life, I like that person I am. Then again, sometimes pain is overwhelming and we just want to erase it from our memory banks. I can understand that too.

there's one relationship that ended so badly and so painfully that it still haunts me years later. I wish I'd never met him.

If I could just erase the last ten or twelve years, I'd do it in a heartbeat, as long as my kids could do it too, and start over with Otter's girlfriend as a new mother. It would be so much kinder for the lot of us.

and neither should you.
Life isn't all happy cakes and sunshine, sorry, it's not supposed to be. Life is good and bad.
Life hurts, but without pain, evil, sadness etc. there is nothing to compare the good times to. Everything wonderful would simply be bland.

5. There is one that I would think about it with. |
|
but what I would prefer is something that would make me feel like the relationship was over a long time ago and that I had recovered from it.

My first girlfriend in high school. We took it all too seriously, got way too attached and it ended up in a suicide attempt (cry for attention) and horrible feelings on all sides.

as PROUD DemocRAT, we learn from our experiences good or bad. I've learned new things from every relationship I've been in, to erase those things would be silly.

9. I sometimes think that I too would go back and change things |

but then I probably wouldn't be where I am now (spiritually, emotionally, etc.) and I like who I am. I think that these experiences either make us bitter or make us grow into more evolved spirits. Fortunately, I feel that I've grown a lot. If I were to erase the relationship that I was most devastated by, I wouldn't have near the compassion, understanding, or appreciation that I have now. At least now I can honestly say that I KNOW what I want in a partner and I KNOW what I don't want in a partner. To me, that means I've learned some important lessons and that I will find my life partner based on my past experiences. I tell you what though, the relationship that most recently ended (one year ago) ended over something that I think could have been resolved. We still really loved each other and I think back at some mistakes I made and often cry when I think....if only I hadn't....or if only I had.... I don't think I'll ever forget her and I would never want to.

i had one horrible relationship and i don't need anything to wipe the memory of it away. i've done pretty well putting it out of my mind and moving on. and now have been in a wonderful relationship for 18 years.
anyway...
is this movie any good?
I loved "Being John Malkovich". honestly, though, I can't stand Jim Carrey, but this movie looks like one I might like.
