Just wondering. Feel free to elaborate on your experiences and how you knew it was love.

No, I can honestly say I've truly been in love, (Ms. Oh will have to be exempt from my list.) When I've cried over someone, or woken up at night wishing they were with me -- I knew, at these times, it was love.

I was stupid for doing what I did. It was hard to date another woman after leaving her(high school)(I didn't break up with her per se, I was living with my grandparents at the time(staunch conservatives, it was tough living with people like that) and then I moved back here in Mesa, AZ. But after awhile I realized I made a big mistake, I was much happier living with north with my grandparents because I realized I had so much(not material things).

once, my first boyfriend, who was killed on News Years Day, 1985 when he, on his motorcycle, ran into a cop car coming through a red light with his lights on.
Second time, the current Mr. Eye22004
I did date a guy for 6 years, but he was an asshole who I have NO IDEA why I didn't just kick his ass the first time he was psychologically abusive to me. Geez, was I so desperate?

"Desperate" has nothing to do with it. Psychologically abusive people tend to exert some kind of control over their victims. Very, very common - I wouldn't take it so hard.

god -- i loved all my lovers -- they were all lovely boys. some relationships were cantankerous -- some boisterous -- some drug/alcohol filled -- some peacefull. and may i have many, many more. for me, variety is definetly the spice of life. oh i should also note that there's a couple of girls in there who comforted me after a couple of break ups and i was up to my damn eyebrows with boys!

I never told her, I liked her too much that I was too scared to ever make a move for fear of rejection. I figure that must have been love. We still talk all the time - she's mexican and lives there. It actually took me a couple years to get over her and start looking around for other girls. Now, however, I don't seem to be too concerned with relationships.

I have been in love only once with my soul-mate. I couldn't choose your "once" though, b/c I feel that I was very fortunate to find him. BUT, I also feel that there can be second or third chances. Luckily, I've never had to test that theory.

Not counting crushes (on guys I knew were inaccessible) and dashed hopes (someone I was about to ask out until I noticed the engagement ring), I've been deeply, desperately in love maybe 3 times now. And judging by what happened -- or didn't happen -- that may have been 3 times too many.

36. Just once. Beware, this is a sad story! |
|
I had the luck to meet the love of my life, lose her, and get her back again.
We dated for two intense years at 19 and 20, the last six months of which was a long-distance affair... we decided that was too gruesome a prospect and went our own ways. We each had our own torrid, painful and scarring relationships afterwards with other people.
Fast forward eight years, and I'm planning a driving trip from SF around the country, to visit old friends. On a whim, I call the only person I know between CA and Boston, she's in Denver, ask her if I could crash a night, maybe we could have dinner.
We married six months later. People in Boston are still waiting for me to show up.
After six wonderful years of marriage, she's "lost the fire" for me and is moving on. Who knows, maybe I'll finally make it to Boston now. Or maybe I just have to wait another eight years for the wheel to spin around for us again.
...and if THAT didn't harsh on yer mellow, I don't know what will. Sorry! :D
Love! Feh! ;)

I define "love" as something mutual where there is a relationship. Where there is some mutual emotional investment going on. I think crushes don't count really. I've have a few unrequited crushes and a few toward me. I had dated several people before I was married and liked them but there was no deeper connection except with one.
I have a hard time letting go and letting myself connect and when it happens, I take my feelings seriously. Love is rather undefinable- you just know, but I was never one to fall in love easily. Never one to even have crushes easily. It's almost like I refuse to let myself go there and click that little switch unless I'm sure they're feeling the same way because I know how powerful it is when I do. I tend to prefer to maintain my composure on matters of the heart which is why I've been able to be so pragmatic in the face of a lot over the past few years.
My loves :loveya: :
The Love That Was My First Love- We had a very strong connection on every level, but it was almost too strong and too much and we were only 16 and 17. It was very amazing and broke my heart when we split. I still think about him sometimes and I haven't even seen him in 10 years.
The Love That Couldn't Be- Another amazing connection type of thing that was very brief. This was not planned, and circumstances made it impossible to really have the relationship we would have wanted and for us to see how it could all work. Not much closure here. This one haunts me for so many reasons. I miss him.
The Love I Wasn't Ready For- This is my marriage. I did love my husband. I still do in a sense, but he was ready for something serious and I was just too young (when we were married he was 28 and I was 19) to know myself and to really even know him. I lost myself for a long time trying to be the person I thought he wanted and trying to always do everything "right" despite many feelings telling me things weren't quite right. We can make a good team, but I don't think that's going to be enough for the long haul in the face of 13 years of assorted hurts and uncertainties.
Edit: bad grammar

I think I was more in love with the notion of being in love.
But then I met the right one and finally knew what love REALLY feels like. Still feeling it after 15 years of ups and downs and twists and turns, and it keeps getting stronger and better as time advances. But alas, we're still unable to experience that highly-touted "sanctity of marriage."

an illusion done with mirrors. Now you see it now you don't! When you crave it, it isn't there. When you have it you just don't know if its really there or not.
