1. Could be a lotta things |
|
and unfortunately one of them may be that the drive in your computer just won't play that particular DVD... have you tested that drive with another DVD?

Is your player software updated? Is the DVD you are trying to play a cheapie?

|
DVD, I mean... So, BoB episode 4 disc won't play in the computer but will in the player, right? And BoB episode 3 plays in both?

12. Oh! Then I definitely |
|
vote for there being some encoding error on the disc. Can you perhaps borrow someone's copy and test it? I would also again check for updates to the player software.

Fact of the matter is that 1st and 2nd generation dvd players and dvd-rom drives have trouble with dual layer DVDs. The laser has trouble switching depths to read the multiple layers and can't play the disc.
Other problem areas: is it a real DVD or a burned one?
The DVD might have RPC encoding on it. In a lame attempt to add even more copy protection, film companies rendered some of their own dvds unplayable on certain players and drives

it comes down to a few possibilities then.
A) the disc is a little messed up and the computer drive is having trouble reading it. That's fairly unlikely, though hardly impossible. I've had a couple of slightly defective discs that played in some players and not others.
b) Your computer's dvd-rom drive isn't up to snuff. Some laser assemblies are crappy--the dvd drive used in the PS2, for example, which is manufactured by Sony, is notorious for being horrible.
c) the third and most likely culprit is your software dvd player. I suggest uninstalling it completely and reinstalling it, or even installing another program--this has worked for me in the past. I don't know what OS you're using, but if it's Windows XP, media player does not count as a separate program--it simply uses whatever DVD software you have installed. I think PowerDVD is slightly better than WinDVD, as a note.

16. If it's literally having no trouble |
|
with any other disc that you own, then there's probably something up with the disc itself. How long ago did you buy the Band of Brothers set?
As a note: all dvd players, software or not, have a certain level of error correction built in to them. So your dvd player may do a better job of error correction than your dvd-rom.

no returning it then. i'd still try reinstalling the software, but other than testing another BoB 3-4 disc or testing it on another computer, I don't have much more advice for you, sadly.

But...
1) Check for scratches/ polish or clean the disc surface 2) Check for cat fur or hair in the tray of the DVD drive....they can cause problems when trying to acess specific parts of discs, which is why this might be a problem but other discs are not 3) Just suck it up, watch Episode 4 on the TV, then the rest on your pc. In some cases, some discs..or portions of discs (both DVD and CD) will not work in some drives sometimes....
