I am so tired of threads getting locked
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 07:13 PM by VelmaD
As much as I hate the word "bitch" and wish people wouldn't use it. And as much as I know people keep bringing it up with the intention of starting a flamewar. And as much as the sexist and juvenile content of some responses to any thread about this subject annoy me.

*big deep breath*

I'd still rather they let us finish a freaking conversation. I was in the middle of responding to matcom when they locked today's "bitch" thread and I was certainly looking forward to seeing what he would have to say...but instead our avenue of conversation was shut down and that peeves me mightily.

So, to the mods or admins...what do we have to do to get to have the conversation? There's obviously no way everyone who wants to get involved can manage to act like a grown-up, but does that have to mean locking down the thread every time?

8. ok...the point I was going to make...
over in that other thread was in response to your little rant about fining people for using "bitch".

First I wanted you to find where I had ever advocated fining anyone on this board. All I asked was that people think about the impact of their words before using them.

Which led into my second point. Why is it that instead of engaging in a conversation about what I actually say on this subject you insist on going off on little rants about me being the "sex police" or other assorted name calling.

10. you are actually WORSE than the FCC
THEY want to fine people. if i can afford the fine, i'll do as i please.

YOU don't want to impose a fine rather want to BAN SPEECH!

btw, you will notice that i am not necissarily a proponent of the 'term' nor do i use it on a regular basis (saving your 'bitching' threads that is)

I never said I wanted to ban the word. My biggest complaint with the threads that Skinner started in GD about this was that he used the word "ban". It set it up for the conversation to be ugly IMO.

What I want is for the rules to be applied even-handedly. We already have rules about racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-religious and anti-athiest posts. We don't "ban" the "n" word. But people generally don't use it unless we're having a conversation about the use of racist, sexist, homophobic etc language. You would never see someone post "Colin Powell is a 'n'" on DU and if they did it would get pulled by the mods in record time. Yet people feel it's ok to post "Condi Rice is a 'b'".

People don't use the "n" word, not even in talking aboiut our opposition, because they've been told that it is offensive and they don't want to offend African-American DUers. I would hope for the same consideration for female DUers. I'm not talking about the mods censoring speech. I'm not talking about the FCC. I'm talking about consideration for the feelings of others and a littel self-censorship like we all do with some other offensive words already.

12. I agree, but I also think that may be _why_ they want to fight about this
yet again.

5. I think it was because of eleventeen threads posted
just to prove a point. The discussion was better served by staying in one thread, rather than trampling all over the board.

Maybe you should PM him to continue your discussion.

I don't envy the mods one bit. It is a thankless job.

the thread would be likely to stay.
