pure fucking genius. One of the few musical groups that are actually musical. Moving beyond basic chord structures. Using unique harmonies. Fabulous, fabulous music.

"If there is one person I have to select as a living genius of pop music, I would choose Brian Wilson." - George Martin (Beatles producer)
Pet Sounds, 20/20, Smiley Smile, Friends, Wild Honey, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Holland are all brilliant.
The other stuff......not so good. Like that 'Kokomo' crap.

Those are all great albums, in fact I have 20/20 in my Jeep at this moment. I despised the Beach Boys for 35 years. Around 5 years ago I started looking into Brian's producing and songwriting and discovered what I missed for 35 years. There is some crap they put out, but very little of it was Brian's. Not to mention that Dennis and Carl weren't really all that bad at what they could do also.

or more specificly, Brian Wilson, created a unique sound - before the Beatles. Whatever you say about their music you have to admit there are two sides to it. There are their formula hits which were pleasant with an interesting style, if not necessarily much force. And there are the deeper more intricate sounding later works like Pet Sounds and Surf's Up (which is a really good and highly overlooked album today).
You probably don't like them because of the "sunny outlook" their songs take but you've got to admit that even if you prefer more topical music they had an intricacy and a uniqueness that you won't find in music today.
Just an old fogey's opinion, mind you.

29. I don't think they "Suck" |
|
There are lots of things I would rather listen to than the Beach Boys:
12 cats fucking in a 55 gallon drum comes to mind as an aural stimulus that would grate on my senses less than the Beach Boys.
I also despise the Doors...
However, both of these groups are revered by many, many people and can legitimately be credited with having significant influence upon the musical landscape. So I won't declare that they "suck", just that I don't like their music.
That said, the sound of 100 three-toed sloths clambering up a giant chalk board is more tolerable to me than "Pet Sounds"

They're grrreat, IMHO. The harmony is just one layer of the music. The music is multi layerd and has to be appreciated from that viewpoint.

I'm a music head. Can't get enough new music, always have to have something fresh (not new, just stuff I haven't heard before). So, Pet Sounds keeps getting mentioned. I admit, I couldn't tell you the first thing about it. I just always figured what I heard of the Beach Boys was in fact the Beach Boys. So anyway, I figure I'll listen to some samples of Pet Sounds on iTunes. And what are the top ten Beach Boys downloads that appear?...
Kokomo, Good Vibrations Wouldn't it Be Nice Surfin USA California Girls Don't Worry Baby Fun, Fun, Fun Good Vibrations Sloop John B I Get Around
Now, sorry, every one of those is an instant radio-changer if I hear it. If those are representations of what the Beach Boys are, then I stand by my original opinion. Is there something I am missing? Can you name a tune for me that doesn't sound like any of these? Cuz these do suck ass.

|
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Sloop John B" are from the Pet Sounds album and Good Vibrations was from the same era.
For the record, the early Beach Boys work was brilliant, but any pretense of the band existing now, with Brian insane and his brothers dead, is completely ridiculous. Mike Love and Al Jardine need to call it a day and stop trying to milk (seperately, no less) something that died decades ago.

Brian Wilson playing and singing "Surf's Up" on the piano made Leonard Bernstein weep. (No jokes, please!)
Seriously, music's a major influence and passion in my life, and I've spent many happy years listening to the Beach Boys, who wrote some of THE best American rock ever. End of story. Sure, for almost 30 years now they've been a travelling nostalgia act, but that can't detract from the---yeah, I'll say it---revolutionary work they did from '62 to about '74.
Ask Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth about Wilson's influence on him. (Seriously.)
Listen to "Let Him Run Wild," or "Surf's Up" or "God Only Knows" or "Caroline" or "Surfer Girl or "This Whole World" and then tell me about "caterwauling." Or were you just taking the piss, mate?

The later touring versions of the band truly sucked but they were great in their day. Brian got some arty credentials with "Pet Sounds", but the earlier stuff was fine, too.
I'd rather hear "Be True to Your School" than anything by Steely Dan, Emerson Lake & Palmer, or a plethora of art-damaged fools.
