"I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, ...
... the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, long foreplay, show tunes, and that the novels of Thomas Pynchon are self-indulgent, overrated crap.

"I believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, I believe that there oughtta be a constitutional amendment outlawing astro-turf and the designated hitter, I believe in the sweet spot, voting every election, soft core pornography, chocolate chip cookies, opening your presents on Christmas morning rather than Christmas eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last for 7 days."

What do you believe in?

3. I believe
in thin crust over thick, that making do with less is more interesting and satisfying than merely plunking down cash, in the stink of a too-loud guitar (thanks, FZ), that time does heal all wounds... and shortening that time is a worthy endeavor, that 1967-79 was a golden age for "adult" (not XXX) movies, that we are indeed heading for a tumultous paradigm tipping point in the next decade or so, that not being able to see a starry sky has impoverished us more than we know...

...and that I'm starting to sound like Larry King's old column, so I'll stop here :)

6. I believe I should go back home
I'm gonna get up in the mornin',
I believe I should go back home
I'm gonna get up in the mornin',
I believe I should go back home
I'm gonna find my baby,
acknowledge that I done her wrong

I don't want no woman,
that stays drunk all the time
I don't want no woman,
that stays drunk all the time
Well you know she's a wild woman,
'bout to drive me out of my mind

I believe, I believe,
I'm going back home
I believe, I believe,
I'm going back home
I gotta lie to my baby,
I know I treated her wrong

I believe, I believe,
my time ain't long
I believe, I believe,
my time ain't long
I left my room this mornin',
I know I treat my baby wrong

8. It shouldn't get locked. It's a baseball thread.
I love baseball movies. Even Kevin Costner can't completely fuck up a baseball movie...

11. TN's riffing
Costner didn't mention voting, either.

I really like baseball movies too. Which is odd, since I'm mostly indifferent to baseball. But, Damn Yankees, Bull Durham, The Natural, Ken Burns, A League of Their Own... I've loved them all.

13. I got that from the "final working script" ...
Edited on Thu Apr-29-04 08:50 AM by TahitiNut
... (at http://sfy.iv.ru/sfy.html?script=bull_durham) and it's clearly somewhat different than the movie.

It's duplicated at ...
http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/lexington/1234/id42.htm
http://www.sportsphds.com/editorials/readarticle.php?articleID=112

Perhaps the more accurate transcription of the actual film quote is ...
Kevin Costner (Crash Davis): Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.
That's how it's transribed at IMdB, which I regard as the most comprehensive and accurate for movies.

Myself, I prefer Pynchon, voting, and seven days.

(I guess that shows a difference between me and Costner.)

10. I believe that is a great movie that all baseball fans should see.
That is a simply amazing speech, but there were a few scenes in the movie (Bull Durham for those who don't know) that still leave me grinning like a fool...

That whole thing of the meeting out on the pitcher's mound to discuss the wedding present for the couple getting married along with that after hours ball game on the wet diamond (with the ball players enjoying the game--it was play rather than work) were just wonderful scenes.

Tim Robbins was just excellent, and Susan Sarandon was her usually stunning self... (Can you tell how MUCH I loved that flick?)

BTW, TahitiNut, THAT monologue you posted makes me weak in the knees every time I hear it. You have NO idea how much I want to believe that ONE speech!

14. You have no idea how often I've wanted to say something ...
... quite similar in various situations I've been in akin to the one portrayed. I think that soliloquy resonates with a lot of guys who fervently wish they could've been as articulate in similar conditions. I think the fact that it resonates with both men and women says we have far more in common than otherwise.

12. I believe
that we will all die and pay taxes.

Beyond that everything is sort of, well, negotiable I guess I would say.

Oh, and that neocons are fvcking evil.
