Poll question: DU's view of U2 |
|
I don't have anything deep to say about U2, so I'll just mention that before anybody takes the use of "Yokoize" as a synonym for the band breaking up as a blast against John and Yoko, relax; it's just one of those joke things. Old as the hills, I remember George Harrison playing on "How Do You Sleep?" and have to take this to mean that Paul broke up the Beatles.
Ok, end of tedious rock history lesson! Whaddayathink about U2?

Just OK. Put out some good pop. Still do on occasion. Nothing to write home about. I actually fell asleep in one of their concerts (well hey, The Pixies opened, and pretty much drained me of all my energy - Now THAT'S a BAND!)

...and I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say they are the best band ever!
Hadda go with the guiness option.

for two would be a pretty positive option. Let's review: how long were the Beatles together? How long were the Stones good?
Still, you're right. I just figured that including the "Great in the 80s/90s" replies was more important considering how long their career has been. Hey, there's always "Other"!:)

4. The only survivor of one of the best periods in rock history |
|
Born in the same era as Van Halen, The Clash, The Police, Black Flag, etc. U2 is the only one of those bands still standing, and with their full membership intact. And they haven't done a bad record yet (except maybe that "Passengers" thing, but they didn't actually put their name on that one)

Just as they were getting huge...Pride (In the name of Love) was just about to hit.
let me tell you- everyone in that arena was transported.
I haven't seen them since because really there could be no topping that show.

They're no Beatles, but they're the next-best-thing.
I always point to U2, REM, and (give me a break) Van Halen when young ones tell me how hard '80's music sucked. :D

They're too easy to shoot down. And they're a bitch to land without breaking off the wings.
The band used to be okay until they became The Biggest Band in the World--contrast "Under a Blood Red Sky" with the 2002 Super Bowl halftime show.

I think I could put together a "Best of U2" disk that would stack up against anybody else, but a lot of their other stuff leaves me, if not cold then at least indifferent. Too late I came to agree with southpaw (when I finally got around to trying to decide what I wanted to vote on myself); I would have liked to edit reply 4 to say: "LOVE some of their songs, but otherwise I can liiiiiiiive with or without them," but alas, it was past an hour. Some I'd put on the Best of disk: Bad, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?, New Year's Day, 40 (Yeah, same song, sue me), Acrobat, All I Want Is You, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With Or Without You, and maybe that Beautiful Day thing.

I love them even when they deviate from that classic sound. All That You Can't Leave Behind was almost up there with the Joshua Tree. Can't wait for the new album.
BTW: Abba's great, too!

I never get too immersed in one band for too long and like exploring new forms, but U2 seems to be one band I always come back to and re-explore every so often. I like 'em a lot.
