My parents just moved out of the house I grew up in. |
|
And I've been helping them move all week. There's just something incredibly surreal and sad about walking through the house where I spent my entire childhood with all the furniture and stuff gone.
It really, really sucks.:-(

1. I remember that feeling very well. |
|
It was about fifteen years ago, and your post effortlessly transported me right back.

2. The house I grew up in is gone. |
|
The neighborhood had deteriorated so much that the only offer we had was from a developer who promptly gutted the house for anything of value and tore it down.
Now it's a parking lot. The worst part was seeing the old place with all the stained glass and hardwood trim ripped out. After that, tearing it down was more like putting it out of it's misery.

a few years ago. Although, I did not help my parents move. I did drive by to see the house with the new owners in it. It really hurt. I even have had dreams about the house, and I am always trying to get back in to it to see what it looks like.
It's sad and it sucks.

7. You're welcome for the welcome. |

You should pick an avatar image. If you pick one that not a lot of other people use then people will start to recognize you eventually.
Have fun!

When I'm back home, I always drive by the house I grew up in, and fantasize about asking the people who live there if I can walk through for old time's sake. But, I never do.

8. One thing that makes me feel better |
|
is that the people who bought the house are a young couple who plan on having kids. Imagining little kids playing in the backyard again, and climbing the huge pine trees, and floating sticks down the ditch after a rain shower, and camping out in the treehouse my Dad and I built when I was 12...
Knowing that some other little kids may enjoy that house as much as I did is a really good feeling, but it still stings to see all the bare walls and clean spots on the carpet where couches sat for years... *sigh*.....

The last time I drove by my house, I saw kids playing in the backyard, and I remember having the same thoughts. They're making memories in the same place that I did, and they will grow up with memories of that house. It is a bittersweet feeling.

10. I hated when we did that. |
|
In 1972 (32 years ago yesterday), we moved out of the only house I knew as a kid. I was 11 at the time.
I hated moving from there. It turned out to be a huge mistake. My parent's marriage was rocky at that point and didn't get any better the next 5 years.
I love to drive by and see that old house. I'd love to see the inside of it again one day.
