Calle Ocho in Little Havana |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 08:43 PM by jiacinto
Today I had lunch at a Cuban restaurant. There was no menu there--the lady just said in Spanish that all they had was chicken and pasta. Anyway I ate the food and it was delicious. I liked Little Havana.
I've heard that somehow "Calle Ocho" is famous. What makes it so famus? What is important about it?

But I'm glad you found something you like in South Florida!
Only chicken and pasta? Guess I can't get Vacca Frita there. (Did I spell that right? I can cook Cuban, Mexican, and Colombian, but can't spell in Spanish to save my soul.) Cuban chicken and yellow rice would be enough to keep me alive for decades! (But I need my beef once in a while.)

3. Calle Ocho is the HEART of the Cuban-American world!!! |
|
Before the Internet and cable news, you walked Calle Ocho to get the news of the day, play some dominoes with friends and drink the STRONGEST coffee this side of the Atlantic!!!
I spent four years living in Broward County and didn't care much for most of Miami, but SoBeach, The Grove and Calle Ocho are my fave places!!!

4. Calle Ocho is where they stage the worlds largest block party every year. |
|
Just wait, you'll see. People will FILL the streets for a whole day and there iwll be parades, music, and lots and lots of great food. It's kinda like our own little mardi gras, sort of. But without all of the trash, beads, raping, and mugging.

5. Calla Ocho is the heart of Little Havana |

Castro lived in the stone house on the corner of Red Rd (or LeJuene) I can't remember which and SW 8th St.
Lots of great Cuban resturants in the area. Some of the hole in wall ones are the best. For less the $5 you can eat very well. Try the Media Noche (Midnight Sandwich), Arroz con Pollo, anything with Pork. Sweet plantains are better than candy but you can keep the flan (too sweet). For breakfast, try the Cuban toast and an expresso if you want to start your day with a real kick.
Anyway, every year they have a festival called Calle Ocho and it's a real wild time. Just be careful, it is a 'bad' neighborhood.
