Poll question: Coolest Homosexual
Edited on Sat Jul-12-03 08:25 PM by Gringo
Who is the coolest gay/lesbian/transgender?

(Thought I'd better PC-afy it a little.

EDIT: Added Melissa Etheridge. Rupert Everett is a bore anyway.

1. Gore Vidal and Ian McKellen are the only ones on that list with any talent
Rosie and Ellen weren't funny before they came out, and being out didn't make them any funnier.

And I think all these folks are pretty talented, personally.

Ian McKellen seems to be the sentimental fave.

Her music is terrible, and I'm convinced she got David Crosby to be the sperm donor for her and her partner so that their children might actually have some musical talent.

..the guy with the handlebar moustache was him. Me and my hetero-narrowmindedness ;-)

The coolest thing about Bob Mould is not only that he was in Husker Du and Sugar, but that he actually was a booker for World Championship Wrestling at one time. That still blows my mind, and if I ever meet him, I'm going to ask him about that, and find out why the fuck we can't get a Husker Du reunion since all three of them are still alive and well.

51. Hooray!
A Ronald Firbank fan, I presume? I have spent the last year or so digging into the lives of Firbank and his circle. I'm researching the life of a close friend of his who appeared as The Hon. Eddy Montieth in 'The Flower Beneath The Foot.'

Sadly I don't think Firbank would have counted as the 'coolest homosexual'. His habit of ducking under restaurant tables to avoid friends and his nervous squirming in public wasn't particularly Wildean.

Still, he did have something in common with Oscar - wallpaper. ("Either that wallpaper goes or I do"-Wilde) It was said that Firbank refused to let any of his friends visit him while he was dying in Rome because "the wallpaper was too dreadful."

29. Huh! Learn something very day!
Guess I figured that anyone that over-the-top (in "Birdcage," at least) was getting immersed in a bit of method acting, that's all. As for "Goldmember," I think I pretty much watched that thing through half-covered eyes, for the most part. I actually can't remember much of it now. Perhaps that's not surprising. I'm still waiting for the funny bits from it.

Before that, he was sorta halfway out. When asked about his sexuality, he'd respond with something like, "“I’m single, I’m 40, and I love musical theater—you do the math.”

52. I was actually joking
Lincoln's homosexuality is an assertion of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of political masochists, based on the fact that he frequently slept with another man during a period in his life. Which makes you wonder whether some of the LCRs think they're gay just because they've slept with a person of the same sex.

61. Harvey in Mulan
Harvey does the voice of a soldier in Mulan. He's the toughest, manliest of them all, and his voice works for that. Hilarious stuff, especially knowing his background.

I think you're right, though. He was the first actor I remember being proud of his homosexuality. He's never bent, never hidden. Cool guy, in the true meaning of cool.

83. I saw Harvey in "Hairspray" on Broadway.
In drag, he plays a Baltimore housewife and really makes that voice work for him...even when he's singing!

Divine (another cool homosexual) originated the role in the movie and used a falsetto voice to portray a woman. But Harvey just uses his own natural, gravelly tones, and it works wonderfully. Maybe because it seems that every gritty urban neighborhood has at least one woman who sounds like Harvey.

you can go to the east to find your
your inner hemisphere
you say we're under the same sky babe
your bound to realize honey it's not that clear
i'm not your promised land oh no
i'm not your promised one
i'm not the land of canaan sweetheart
waiting for you under the sun

i'm lonely tonight
i'm missing you now
i'm wanting your love
and you're giving it out
i'm lonely tonight
i'm lonely tonight
i'm lonely tonight

well, the meanings changed
for what it's worth
it's just a senseless game
well i should think of love
but it's fear every time i hear
honey your heartbeat strain
it's not the fallen man
it's not the call of time
it's just the london skyline sweetheart
telling me you're not mine

i'm lonely tonight
i'm missing you now
i'm wanting your love
and you're giving it out
i'm lonely tonight
i'm lonely tonight
i'm lonely tonight

my blood is running dry
my skin is, my skin is growing thin
for every time you find yourself
you loose a little bit of me honey from within
it's just a raging cycle
why can't we bring it all to the end of the line
from inside this existence, sweetheart
time is not on my side

i'm lonely tonight
i'm missing you now
i'm wanting your love
and you're giving it out
i'm lonely tonight
i'm lonely tonight
i'm lonely tonight

i'm not your promised land
(i'm lonely tonight)
i'm not your promised one
(honey i'm trying to tell you that i'm lonely tonight)
i'm not your promised land
i'm not your promised one
i'm not the land of canaan
(i'm lonely tonight)
i'm not your land of canaan
(i'm lonely tonight)
i'm not the land of canaan sweetheart
waiting for you under the sun

70. One vote for a hometown boy - Bertrand Delanoë
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 03:35 AM by Paschall

Sunday, March 18, 2001, Paris. In a massive crowd outside City Hall people raise their keys to symbolize mayoral victor Bertrand Delanoë's imminent possession of the city's keys.

MARCH 19, 2001. In one fell swoop, the Sunday victory of Bernard Delanoë in the race for the Parisian mayoralty establishes an out gay person as top dog of a world-class city, while installing a left-wing alliance in the driver's seat of the city council for the first time since the 1871 Paris Commune.

Born in 1950 in the North African country of Tunisia, Delanoë returned to France with his family when he was a teenager. (The Gully) (a resource to bookmark)

(Not forgetting this incident: "M Delanoë ... was strolling through the gilded chambers of the 19th-century Hôtel de Ville at about 2.30am," on Oct. 6, 2002, "when a man of 39 leapt on him and stabbed him in the stomach with a five-inch blade." (The Telegraph)

78. Transgender legend
As a transgendered I say the person responsable for the
stonewall riot.

Sylvia Rivera, popularly credited as being the instigator of
the Stonewall Riots, passed away this morning at approximately
5:00 AM, February 19, 2002, in the intensive care unit of St.
Vincent's Hospital, in New York's Greenwich Village. She had
been in and out of the hospital recently due to cancer of the
liver. Both her lover, Julia Murray, and Reverend Pat
Bumgardner of the MCC-NY (Metropolitan Community Church-New
York), were at her side as she passed on. She was 53.

An internationally recognized pioneer in what became known as
the "Gay Rights Movement", Ms. Rivera was one of the
collection of drag queens, transsexuals and stone butch
lesbians on the scene, June 27,1969 -- the fateful moment of
the Stonewall Riots. Though the uprising is the subject of
legend, Sylvia Rivera's name was always synonymous with the
catalytic moment that became history. On an annual basis, she
was requested across the country, and across the globe, to
recount the historic incident in first-person detail.

84. what a fabu poll!
My vote is Martina. I would bear her child.

I would also vote for David Kopay. He was the first pro athlete to ever come out--of course he did it after he retired from pro football but he did it in the 70s when coming out wasn't cool.
