Poll question: Should Modem call her Republican friend back? |
|
A friend of mine who's a total W supporter left me his first message after the election. I suspect he wants to gloat- after all, I gloated in '96, he gloated in '00. I don't know if I'm emotionally strong enough to deal with it this time, though, with so much at stake. What do you think I should do?

5. I don't know if I can do that... |
|
We've been friends for ten years. He helped me bury one of my dogs. I was best "man" at his wedding. He named one of his children after me. His sister calls me for personal advice. I don't know if I can cut him out of my life for politics.
But I don't know how to deal with him right now.

There's a big difference between being angry and not being prepared to handle talking about the election. I still haven't talked to my sister yet and she's a huge Democrat-I don't have the energy yet to commiserate in person with someone who feels the same way I do-I definitely can't deal with people who want to gloat. I don't think a lot of them realize how passionate we were about this election. Take your time and explain it to him when you are ready. If he's as good a friend as you think, he'll understand.

United Fascist States of America. I no longer want to be known as a pinko commie. Pink is too close to red. Call me a blue American.

If he's that good of a friend. Jeez, friendships, they ain't easy. I already did this, and it diffused the situation, and the ribbing, which was light-hearted from my friend, has already ended. She didn't live and breath politics though. It may be different for your friend.
I can't keep up this anger ruling over my life. It was bringing me down. I'm starting to apply it selectively. BBV, etc.
I refuse to let the election ruin anything else than it has.

4. i wouldn't call him back, maybe not ever |
|
If he called to gloat, he is not a friend. Time to write off this trash and stop giving them our emotional support when their behavior is unacceptable. There are billions of people in the world, you can find friends who won't gloat at the trampling of your beliefs.

after all, you said yourself you gloated in '96. It would be sad to lose a good friend. Maybe just ask him to keep the gloating to himself or it will jeopardize your friendship. If he continues after asking him to stop, then it might be a good time to reconsider the friendship.
