"The Center for the Cure of Sweaty Palms"
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 12:32 PM by Jack_Dawson
I heard a radio advertisement for this place. Can someone tell me what this is? I never thought of having sweaty palms til I heard this ad. Then I got sweaty palms just thinking about it. The power of advertising I guess.

2. Usually this kind of ad is for places doing a specific kind of surgery.

Sweating is controlled to a large degree by the sympathetic nervous system, a network of nerves that runs near the spine. The ones controlling sweating of the hands (and this is apparently a HUGE PROBLEM for some people) are in the chest area.

Burning or severing those nerves can cure the problem. I have no idea how effective this kind of surgery is, or how frequently complications or failure of the treatment occurs, or how often it comes back after successful treatment.

The places doing this usually do so through a scope so the incisions are small, with less pain and more rapid recovery.

As you can see, there's some pretty important stuff right near those nerves, so you wouldn't want just any bozo to be messing around in there.

3. I talked to a doc about
the surgery. He reported it cause problems with umm down under. I have had hyperhydrosis for many years. Aluminum hexahydrate burned the hell out of my hands. Google hyperhydrosis. There is an association out in cali i think.

5. Really?
Me too and it is very embarrassing. I work outside and the minute it gets above about 75 I am a puddle of sweat. I will have to check them out.

8. Actually I just read a bunch of medical abstracts about this procedure
on pubmed.com (search terms "hyperhidrosis sympathectomy")

There are a variety of different procedures.

I didn't see impotence or ejaculatory problems mentioned as a specific consequence of this. If you have this kind of surgery done on the sympathetic nerves in the LOWER body then impotence can definitely be a complication.

There does seem to be a failure and recurrence rate.

One abstract mentioned some of the patients having more sweating in the LOWER body after successful surgery (possibly more "sympathetic output" down there after elimination of the sympathetics up top. Not sure if this would have any potential potency issues).

I suspect the doc you spoke to might have been thinking about LUMBAR (lower body) sympathectomy where potency issues definitely exist...
