1. have Jose get you this book if you don't already have it-
it comes well recommended. My husband uses it a lot.

The Curry Book by Nancie McDermott. Seems to be a few dal recipes in there.

3. Here's one
This is from Weight Watchers Take-Out Tonight. It's the only recipe I have ever tried for dal, but I've had it and I think it's pretty good. Actually, everything I've made from this cookbook has been good :)

If it doesn't sound good to you, you can find other Indian recipes at http://www.rumela.com/recipe/continental_recipes_indian.htm and http://recipes.indiaserver.com/ I love Indian food, and while I haven't had dal often I've tried at least one recipe from each of those sites and they were good.

Dal with Spiced Tomatoes and Potatoes

1 medium baking potato, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch squares
1/4 cup red lentils, picked over, rinsed, and drained
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 onion, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
1-1/4 teaspoons garam masala
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 pound plum tomatoes, chopped
1 (15-1/2 ounce) can chipeas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
1 tablespoon peeled minced fresh ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

1. Bring a large saucepan of lightly salted water to a boil. Add potatoes, return to a boil, and cook until fork-tender, 7 minutes; remove with a slotted spoon and set aside, reserving the cooking liquid.

2. Add lentils to the same saucepan and return cooking liquid to a boil. Cook until lentils are tender but still hold their shape, 8-10 minutes; drain and set aside.

3. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Swirl in the oil, then add the onion, jalapeno, garam masala, and cumin. Cook until onion begins to soften, 3-4 minutes. Stir in the potatoes, tomatoes, chickpeas, ginger and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tomatoes soften and potatoes are tender, 4-5 minutes. Stir iin lentils and cook until heated through, 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in cilantro.

7. Here's mine:
This is loosely from Madhur Jaffrey:

1 cup split red lentils
1 cup mung beans
3 cups water

1 thinly sliced onion
1 tbls. cumin seeds
dried red peppers
1 tbls. oil
salt to taste
fresh cilantro

Cook the beans and lentils in boiling water in a stock pot until tender (about 1 hour). In the meantime heat a skillet and throw in the cumin seeds and red peppers. Toast on high till the seeds turn brown and become fragrant and the peppers turn very dark red. Add the oil and sliced onion. Cook the onion until it starts to turn reddish brown. Add the contents to the beans and salt to taste - garnish with cilantro.
