Protests, Prayer Vigils To Greet 'Kinsey'
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 05:31 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
Religious conservatives and family-values groups are planning to wage a battle against Fox Searchlight's Kinsey, about the pioneering sex researcher, when the movie opens in limited release on Friday. In a statement on Wednesday, Robert Knight of Concerned Women for America charged that the movie "lionized" a man whose "proper place is with Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele or your average Hollywood horror flick mad scientist." Knight went on to assert that Kinsey "was the godfather of the homosexual activist movement, the campaign to mainstream pornography, and even the campaign to strike down abortion laws." The youth group Generation Life, composed of "virgins and renewed virgins," announced that it would picket theaters showing the film. And the conservative WorldNetDaily.com has taken aim at the movie in the current issue of its monthly magazine Whistleblower, in which it charges that Kinsey transformed America "in five decades from the Leave It to Beaver innocence of the 1950s to today's wanton, 'anything-goes' sexual anarchy

Okay folks, come on now, let's compromise and reach-out to these fine people! We want their votes in 2008, dammit!

:eyes:

I may have to go out and get myself laid in protest. :D Did you notice that a man is speaking for the Concerned Women for America group?

Mods: it's one big paragraph of many on the IMDB page.

2. Wait a minute
Robert Knight of Concerned Women for America ?

WTF? I have heard the name "Bobbie" used for women but I don't think I have ever met a woman named "Robert".

Robert Knight of Concerned Women for America? That would be one effed up group.

5. Robert Knight is the same guy behind CA's Prop 22 -- anti-gay initiative
passed in 2000, IIRC.

10. So he is a gay basher who speaks for women?
So there isn't any room in his world for gays and women with opinions? What a fucking prick.

Did I ever mention that I hate assholes? I am sorry for his son. His wife? She must be a total idiot but kids can't pick their parents.

Ass.

28. I was totally going to post the same thing!
"Robert Knight of Concerned Women for America".

So, they won't even let the "Concerned Women" speak for themselves? Even though they'd just spew the same ridiculous crap. Still! Very telling ...

3. If it's showing in my area, I'll go see it
just to walk in holding Mrs. V.'s hand and look in their eyes. Maybe I'll kiss her, too, just for them.

promise you will!

I live here in SF and I never get to experience any of these "cultural events" like a "Kinsey" protest. Heck, I can barely find a Bush/Cheney sticker in town. :).

26. It's only out in limited release this weekend, I've just learned....
and truth to tell, I'll have to check w/ Mrs. Venation to see if she'll go along w/ my plan. But I used to be one of those jackasses, HHNF. I never protested against gays but I screamed "don't kill your baby!" at women going into PP clinics. :shame:

Since I've been one, I have a strange desire to TELL THEM SO. It'll prob'ly get me killed. Sigh.

7. Okay-
what the hell is a "renewed virgin"? Now I have to make sure I see this film. They just don't get it, do they? The more they protest films that they don't like, the more publicity it gets, more folks saying, "Hmm. I wonder what the fuss is about, maybe I should check it out." The more people go to see it. My rule of thumb is, "If it offends the reichwing wackos, I have to see it."

I don't want to compromise with these people. I don't even want to share this country with them.

16. Sure you can...
if you had those kids out of wedlock and now pledge to not have sexual relations until you are married, you have officially become a "renewed" virgin!

20. The renewed virgin
Step 1: Daughter gets laid. Whether she asked for it or was talked into it, daughter is no longer a virgin.

Step 2: Fundie mother finds out about it.

Step 3: Fundie mother drags deflowered daughter straight to church, where she's placed in "virginity renewal." She gets to learn about how the ICB really hates people who get laid before they're in a "loving covenant marriage."

Step 4: Daughter swears pledge stating that she will Sin No More.

Step 5: Mother is now happy that daughter is a Renewed Virgin.

Absolute Bullshit is a mild way to put it.

12. Uhhhh......"Renewed Virgins"?
Somebody needs to tell "Generation DEATH" that once you've had "IT", you can't become a virgin again.
I don't care how much you plead with Jeebus Crisco, you can't change your past.

You can LIE about it, you can rationalize it "oh, I joined this group, and we prayed, and Jeebus made my cherry pop back into place" But you ain't a virgin...

I swear, forget about this group of GOP voters. Head for the ones that have libertarian leanings, because we should be able to appeal to them MUCH more than the 'new' Republican Party.

24. BURN THE WITCH! BURN THE WITCH!
I'm already sick of this newly "empowered" religious right. Fucking twits. To comment on one of their favorite bumper stickers, I almost wish Mary and Joseph were pro-choice and aborted the baby Christ. That way, you goddamn morons would have never come into existence.

Fuck... Kinsey? They're protesting KINSEY?

25. Another story on the Kinsey protests
Here's another story from CNN.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/11/11/film.kinsey.protests.ap/index.html

"pro-choice and aborted the baby Christ"
Careful now. Remember, it's not religion that is the problem, but how people use and manipulate religion that poses the problem. Even if you're not a Christian, the social ideas that Jesus of Nazerath was teaching, Messiah or not, weren't half bad. Loving one another, not judging, not killing... Jesus is a liberal! We don't want him aborted.

Now, for some of his followers... that's a different story...

27. What Do These Twits Hope To Accomplish?
This is just more of the same. The fundies pick an utterly worthless cause to get all pissed off about, make some noise, and go back home having made absolutely no difference to anyone. And while they're at the theater protesting, their party's leadership signs another tax cut for the wealthy, and half of them lose their jobs.

"Cause and effect" has no meaning for these people. They get to have their righteous indignation, but no matter what they do, the Kinsey movie will be shown in wide release, quite a few people will go to see it, and the movie will stand or fall based on its own merits. They'll never so much as consider whether their protest made any kind of difference.

I like to call this "spiritual masturbation." The protesters get to feel really great about themselves for thirty seconds or so, but ultimately nothing comes of it.

31. BBCamerica's "Talking Movies" featured this guy...
He got a small segment during their report on the movie. No editorial comments were made; they weren't needed. Just an especially wry smile from the show's host.

The movie's not in Houston yet, but I'll probably see it. In order to support freedom--not just to gaze upon Liam Neeson, I promise!

33. There is no such thing as bad publicity
These protestors will help make money for this film. A film opening is just a film opening until someone starts complaining.

I worked for the film company that release "Soul Man". The premise of the film sounds pretty objectionable: a white kid, C Thomas Howell, takes an abundance of tanning pills so he can steal a scholarship intended for African American students. The actual film is a voyage of discovery and understanding about a privileged white kid who has a lot to learn. But regardless the NAACP came out and protested the opening night of the film and it became the most successful film the company ever made. They didn't see the film. They just heard the premise and protested.

The promoters for "Kinsey" may well be stoking this fire.
