Jeff Gordon, NASCAR Cup champion? |
|
Not taking anything away from Kurt Busch because he won the title fair and square under the new Nextel rules. Under Nextel we have the Chase for the title which pits the top ten ONLY in points sometime in September to begin the title in earnest.
Under the old system in place prior to this season Jeff Gordon would have won his fifth title by 47 points over Jimmie Johnson. Kurt Busch would only muster a 4th in points behind Dale Earnhardt Jr.

...*but*...
the new points system *IS* in place.
So no matter what WOULD'VE happened, that's not what DID happen.
Kurt Busch won it fair and square. (Well, as far and square as it ever gets over at Rouche)
I would've loved to see Hendrick's get one this year, either Jimmie or Jeff, but it just didn't happen.
And to think, that wheel coming off Kurt's car and him just missing the outside pit wall... if that would've gone just a LITTLE bit differently, Jeff or Jimmie could've had the championship easily.
I am also really bummed that my favorite driver, Ryan Newman, crashed while LEADING, and so close to the end of the race. Even thought it doesn't matter, points-wise, it's the principle of the whole thing.
Remarkable driver, but the worst luck I have ever seen a driver have.
