Wales and Welsh culture thread. Sorry, no Romans allowed. |

Well, paint me blue! I'm the only Welshman alive who can't carry a tune.
Leek soup, anyone? It's made with coal!

And I'm afraid the only thing I can add here is: Cardiff freakin' rocks, and it's one helluva' place to be a best man at a wedding.
My best friend of twenty years is from Cardiff, and he was married there last year. (His entire family has it's roots there; a Vancouver wedding was not an option.)
Seriously, the only thing I remember about the five days was being on the train back to London, and asking my partner: "What just happened there? And what's the Bumbles?"
I will definitely be returning under less chaotic circumstances.

...but it's a rough town. Drop into the Crossed Keys pup on tuesday; it's "Bulldyke Karaoke Night". I kid you not! And boy, did we find out the hard way!

But I was with a bunch of "the lads" in a wedding party, all of them firmly entrenched in the city and culture, so it all just kinda' "worked". I fit right in.
Although, some of the places we went to for the stag festivities (which, incidentally, lasted three of the five days) I'd never consider going to on my own. (Hell, I wouldn't remember where they were anyway!)
Peace, laddy!
on edit: RE: "Bulldyke Karaoke Night". I do remember seeing lotsa' serious biker/lesbians on ninja-style bikes. To me, it just added to the ambiance of the place.

Jones *is* the Welsh Jones. Evan and Jones is the Romanization of Ieuan (so is Ewing, a Scot clan that originated in Wales*). English surnames indicate "son of" by adding a "son" or simply an "s" to the end of a name, so EvanS is the Anglicized version of the Welsh ap'Evan or Bevan (Probert = ap'Robert; Bowen = ap'Owen; Pritchard = ap'Richard; Price = ap'Rhys, etc).
*Not MacEwen, though the Ewings did band with the Otter clan.
