PET PEEVE thread (Mine is what's heard on radio) |
|
One of my biggest pet peeves is that while driving and listening to the radio, soundbytes of cell phones ringing and emergency vehicle sirens are thrown in on news reports and commercials. Each and every time those have me doing a knee-jerk reaction and distract me from driving.
IMO, those soundbytes should be outlawed by the FCC....but hey! Should Micheal Powell even be concerned about this when he and his gang are so busy with the ever-present danger of nudity and foul language during television airtime? </sarcasm>

No one under 25 seems to own a watch. Almost every time I go out shopping or on the bus, I am approached by teens and early twenties people asking me what time it is.
I don't mind telling them, but it's such a conspicuous pattern, that I have to ask: why don't these people own a watch? You can buy a cheap one at the drugstore for the price of a CD, and if watches just seem oh so twentieth century to you, can't you at least look at the display on your cell phone?

14. I used to be one of those |
|
I used to do that all the time in the mall when I was a teenager. Sorry. I still don't wear a watch, but I have a cellphone so I don't need a watch really. Watches always bugged me, I had them but couldn't stand how it felt to wear them. Same with rings and bracelets.

My least favorite radio ads are the ones for Onstar which feature screaming and wailing children in the background as Mommy rings Onstar for assistance. ARRGHH! Drives me nuts.

5. Driving pet peeves...tailgaters and left-lane bandits |
|
Outside of driving: when people use an acronym and to make it plural put 's on the end of it showing possession/ownership. For instance: Americans are buying SUV's. NO....it's Americans are buying SUVs.

6. Ahhhh...the Left-Lane Bandits!! |
|
Those who either speed past you to cut in front of you, only to go slower than the posted speed, or the same who stick to the left lane in order to play Traffic Speed Control Cops.

8. A columnist in Portland used to issue citations for |
|
"apostrophe abuse" whenever he saw something like that around town.
The other punctuation mistake that drives me nuts is the use of quotation marks for emphasis instead of underlining or bold type or caps:
We have the "best" prices
instead of
We have the best prices
or
We have the best prices
or
We have the BEST prices
You know the poor ignorant maker of the sign intended to emphasize "best," but he ended up saying "We say we have the best prices, but we don't really, you know."

9. I hate those Bush stickers |
|
In this heavily red party of Houston, TX, I still see those damn bumper stickers.
That's not my pet peeve, though.
What I hate is that they always are driving gas guzzling, speeding vehicles and they drive like maniacs. About 95 in a 65 - and look at me like I'm insane for driving the speed limit.
It's the only time I've ever wanted to own a weapon in my entire life.

Definitely one of my other pet peeves!
It's not 1960's or the '60's. It's the 1960s or '60s.

I'm editing this group paper to present on Thursday. These people have horrible writing skills in general, but I have lectured ad nauseum about the year's thing. They will not listen. They insist because they have seen it in print, it is correct. I think they probably voted for Chimpy too based on that "logic" (quotation marks correctly used here I think).

Tear here my ass! If it actually tears, it's still stuck together below the point where you tore it. Or you push here and the box smashes. Or those seamed plastic bags that you pull on both sides, but the seam rips violently and the stuff goes flying every which way. And the sewing on bags of kitty litter that's supposed to unravel when you pull the string. And those cheapie ziplock arrangements that don't fit together ...

I just walked over to B-R to get an ice cream. Not only were the staff already complaining about hearing the Little Drummer Boy for the 80th time today, they were hawking tips for the Gulf Coast Christian School in FL they said was still a mess from the hurricane. The note to donate was addressed to "Costumers" and I thought it might be Halloween.
A helpful costumer/customer in front of me politely suggested they correct the spelling error and after much debate the revised sign appeared addressed to "custumers". And these kids go to school at one of the best schools on the west side of town.

24. When someone finishes pumping gas and leaves their car parked |
|
by the pump while they go inside to pay. And while inside they go to the bathroom, microwave some gross food, dispense a slush puppy, read some magazines, buy some scratch-off lottery tickets and scratch them off while they are there, instead of pulling up and parking in front of the convenience mart thus allowing for other people to pump their gas!
BTW, this happened to me today at a very busy gas station/convenience mart. I do not know what the driver of the car in front of me was really doing inside for so long, I'm just guessing.;)
