need help with origin of the asterisk
I believe is was one of the dissenting justices in Bush v. Gore who said that bush* would forever have an asterisk next to his name.

Can anyone find the justice and the quote. I've tried googling it different ways with no success. I find references to it, but not who said it and the actual quote.
Thanks.

1. did you try the DU glossary?
The quote isn't on the DU glossary page, but there may be a link to the exact quote there. http://dug.seattleactivist.org/#*

3. Garry Trudeau has always used a * to denote W
in the Doonesbury universe. Typically, an asterisk in a Stetson. This is keeping with the family theme as Trudeau sybolized Bush Sr with a feather.

I always thought our use of * here at DU came from Doonesbury.

4. Roger Maris...
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 02:51 PM by Davis_X_Machina
..in 1961 broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season, but since Ruth took only 154 games to hit 60, Maris' 61 in 162 games seemed to many traditionalists to be tainted. Ford Frick, the then commissioner, had Maris' record listed with an asterisk.

Since then, it's shorthand for an achievement tainted by considerations of the cirumstances under which it was achieved.

5. I really think one of the justices said it.
I'll try running this by again.
