3. There has to be something more to Rush and NFL gig.

What is it? Why did they pick him to do the NFL/ESPN thing? Of course having him rammed down your throat, by putting him on a sports broadcast made sure that, at the very least, people who despise him will just turn the volume down, but still watch the game.

But why him, and why now? He says he is a big football fan...big freaking deal. I think he's seeeing the end of the hate radio gravy train, and with help from Disney(who are under fire from fundies), this helps Disney off the hook a bit, and it helps him because he is just a big 'ol football guy on the show. "How could he be that bad...he is on ESPN."

There is more to this I think than the media is going into. I think he is trying to do a very methodical makeover. This is the first step.
