It is butt-cold outside
Low of 35 degrees tonight here in east central Illinois. I have to take kids on an insect hunt tomorrow, but I don't know if the bugs are going to be around.

1. I hope you use different words to describe the cold
When you're with the kids. Or, was that the main idea? Catch attention by using a "cute" expression that you just knew would sound way cool on DU.

3. No. Not for attention getting.
I use "butt-cold" all the time. That is they way I talk. Of course not in front of children.

10. Why?
What's the precise reason for not using this expression in front of the kids? Is the word "butt" any worse for describing a person's rear than the word "noggin" is for describing their head? I don't understand the objection.

11. The objection is simple.
If I say something funny, like "butt", I won't be able to get their attention again. I try to do an amusing program, but I have to stay away from words that will cause an uproar. These are kindergarten through third graders and their attention is hard enough to get, let alone maintain. I would be shooting myself in the foot to jeopardize that.

It got down to 42 last night here (central Ohio), but i can't say I'm sorry to see the mosquitoes or the flies gone.

4. I'm in the middle of Hurricane Juan
and my lights are flickering. The humidity is 93% and I gotta say that's worse than all the huffing and puffing outside.

Speaking of bugs. Did you see the bed bug story on CNN tonight? I ran to all my bedrooms and tore the sheets off - real quick like - to see if anything moved. (Nothing did)

5. I hope you escape with no or minimal damage.
I didn't see that story. I don't get CNN, but I have heard that bedbugs are making a comeback (did they ever leave?).

6. MEMORIES!
I used to live in Chambana. Now, I'm in Houston (never mind my screenname, I joined DU 2 years ago and didn't want to lose my post count!)

Miss that kind of weather. Cuddle up with someone warm and enjoy.

:hi:

12. We're not too far off...
43 degrees for a low in chilly Ithaca, New York...

I say, if it's going to be cold at night, the trees can at least change color already! Then it will be pretty around here!

17. really, butts are pretty warm
Usually they are covered, and either they are sitting in an easy chair or out shaking on a dance floor or being worked off. So the phrase "butt-cold" really is oxymoronic.
If you can forgive the stereotype, I like to use the expression "it is colder than a businessman's heart during a recession" but it has to be below zero before it is that cold.
Okay, maybe the phrase should be "colder than a Republican's heart" but I am not sure that they have hearts. Or brains. Or courage. Oh my.

18. the term "butt-cold" comes from
"colder than a gravedigger's ass", a term very dear to my Irish great-grandmother. Butt-cold is cleaned up and shortened. Everyone in my family says it. I didn't know it would be such a big deal.

21. First frost this morning
I had to scrape my windshield and was seven minutes late for work as a result. My friend missed protecting her flowers. She had planned doing it today when I talked to her last night.

22. NE Florida checking in.
High of 77 in Jacksonville today. This morning there was a bit of a chill in the air. Too bad it's not going to last, though. Normally it doesn't get chilly here until mid-October; even after that, expect some days when it gets into the 80s.

My favorite time of year, fall. :)
