DU's web format is so much better than Free Republic's |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 02:53 PM by Homer12
Just on a stylistic matter, DU is so much easier to use and is pleasing to the eye than Free Republic's Site, and easier to use to boot.
Call is elitism if you want Freepers, but it's true.

The DU forum is the easiest I have ever used. I am so partial to it that I have trouble on other forums. I am not a techie so some of the other forums just tend to confuse me.
A hip, hip hurrah for the GREAT Democratic Underground.

3. Yeah it is very hard to figure out who is responding to who over there |
|
Oh for the love of God if it was supposed to be "whom" forgive me.
Of the forums I have happened upon DU is easily the most readable.

reading the run on paragraph that has no white space. It is very hard to see who is replying to who. Very confusing.

because as liberals we obviously are lacking in the skills and sheer brain power needed to navigate a truly mangled program such as FR's board.

6. While the format here is great, I think it also has something to do |
|
with the fact that DUers in general can write coherently.
The few times I've been to Freeperland I felt like I was wandering around in the fog.

8. Their search feature really sucks |
|
If you type two words into the search box with quotation marks around the phrase, you still cannot get the words to show up together.

Not only is the content great here, but the ease of understanding who is saying what to whom really makes it great. A toast to those responsible for the great message board :toast:

10. I disagree on one thing. |
|
The only thing I like about freeperville better is that it's easier to track replies to your posts. If I'm arguing with someone their, I just hit 'my comments' and it pulls up all replies made to me on any thread.
At DU, you have to remember every thread you post on, find it (if it isn't lost in the archives) and hope you can still reply.

12. The Search fulfills that |
|
No it's not one button but in the morning or whenever you log on you can check on replies to your threads and posts.

11. Well, there's one question that I have... |
|
There's one feature on that board that I find useful. When you reply to someone's post, there's a way to alert you that your reply has itself drawn a reply. You can, in fact, put in someone's name and see everything they've posted lately, in reverse chronological order.
Of course, now that FR has banned almost all dissenting voices, and there are very, very few remaining articulate writers, there's not much incentive to perform that sort of search. I used to find some of their threads on foreign affairs interesting. There were a lot of posters from other countries, who at least knew the issues and the affected regions. Now almost all of those people are gone.
Is there a way to do that kind of thing over here? I have to remember to bookmark a post, so that I can check it out next time I log in...

13. I like our format better, too. |
|
I like the thread overview structure.
I followed another link over there a few minutes ago about Rush slamming DU. I can't understand why all these people who hate potsmokers so much, venernate the lies of a narcotics addict. Bit of a disconnect I'd say.
The really funny thing is their conviction about accepting different opinions....we have far more tolerance for dfferent viewpoints, no question in my mind on that issue.....everything is so "vanilla" over there. I guess I'd be trying to sign up for DU, too, if I were stuck in that echo chamber for any length of time.
