...who doesn't know when to shut up after 12 years - just re-runs and re-runs the same schtick for another 12 years.

I think it destroyed his acting career. By now I can't stomach the sound of his voice.

Proof positive that you can make a sitcom that doesn't have one joke or funny situation throughout the show. Just crank up the laugh-track whenever someone speaks. What a horrible, horrible program.

16. Friends
Probably the most overrated in my mind.

I dislike "Everybody Loves Raymond" but I don't think it has quite level of a following that "Friends" has/had, and I don't think there are critics and the like who consider it to be a great sitcom, which there must have been (or maybe I'm wrong) with "Friends" considering how much I had to hear about that dumb show. May have just been the hardcore fan-base talking, though.

"Married... with Children" lasted for far too long, but it's hard to be too hard on it 'cause I don't think they took themselves seriously at all. It's like they knew they were a horrible show and worked to be that way.

"Seinfeld" and "Cheers" are my two favorites on the list; actually the only ones I care much for.

Facts of Life and Different Strokes and Gimme a Break were also terrible and lasted way longer than they should have...

But none of them achieved the near cult-like status of "Friends."

Hate it, Hate it, Hate it. All the actors suck, I won't even consider a movie with one of these rubes in the lineup. I have suffered through a few episodes, because my wife loved the show. To be honest, I would rather stick pins in my cornea while taking a high colonic with lemon juice.

Only because you said the MOST over-rated.

Mildly amusing, but definately NOT the best TV show ever (according to TV Guide - what the hell do they know, anyways?).

The best, you ask? Why, Bob Newhart, of course!

30. Hmm.
Cheers was a show that got better as it took itself less seriously.

Fraiser was a great sitcom that just got tired with age and poor scripts. The early seasons were really good though. It was a sitcom that didn't take the intelligence of the audience for granted.

Married... With Children was just lunacy, and it can't be taken too seriously. Like someone else said, they strived to be an awful show, and there's humor in that.

Seinfeld really took a nose-dive after Larry David left, but the earlier seasons were good. After David left, they become too self-aware and started trying to create catch-phrases, coming up with innovative plots (the backwards episode? Ugh), and turned the show from commenting on everyday life into getting the characters into unrealistic scenarios.

Home Improvement was lame for most of its run, but the first season had a certain spark to it. The formula and characters got old real fast though.

I guess I'd say Friends, although the writing was sharper than some people give it credit for. Yes, I don't understand the cult that developed around it, as it wasn't that remarkable, but there were some funny gags to be found there every now and then. The characters were just too unlikable though. At least with Seinfeld they were supposed to be self-absorbed asses.

33. "Joey": one seriously limp dicked "comedy"
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 07:03 AM by terrya
This alleged comedy should never, ever have been aired. A disaster from the start...IF a "Friends" character was to be spun off, it should have been Phoebe. Lisa Kudrow is quite talented and could carry her own show very well. Matt LeBlanc is...well, Matt LeBlanc. Plus...whatever likable qualities Joey Tribbiani may have had in "Friends" have been completely sucked out of this show. "Joey" just comes off as a unfunny lout.

"Joey" is egregiously bad because of the money behind it, the buildup by the network and the anticipation involved. "Joey" is the worst kind of cynical, soulless "humor" today.

34. Friends. Hands down, the most overrated.
Sure, there were others that were worse, but they either didn't get the ravings that Friends got, or they died a quick death like Friends should have.

Seinfeld was pure genius.

My sister, who decorates her home with http://www.homeinteriors.com stuff, loved Friends.

The first was very unfunny, and none of the characters were particularly likeable or engaging. Too much whining!

Frasier was too clever by half. Too self-aware of its attempt to be clever.

36. Will and Grace
I voted other, and would have voted for Will and Grace had it been a choice.

Frasier would be a close second. It was OK when it started, but it lasted too long.

Another current one that has been on a long time that I just don't get is King of Queens.

39. I Can Tell You
It led into Seinfeld when Seinfeld was still truly great and had the largest audience in the U.S.

Friends had the lead in and it became HABIT for people to watch it. That has to be it, because the show was awful.

40. I heard Seinfeld talking about "Friends"
He basically said that NBC ripped off his show to create their own version.

I agree-NBC's Thursday night ratings used to be so out of this world that they could have filmed 22 minutes of a guy eating soup and it would have still scored in the top ten (read:Suddenly Susan/Caroline in the City).
