Dear Free Republic,
In all my letters, I try harder than anything else to make myself clear. I try to state things as simply and unambiguously as I can, because I find that that's the best way to convince my readers that Free Republic seems to be fond of concocting new ways to fund a vast web of beer-guzzling nymphomaniacs, neocolonialism-oriented authoritarians, and supercilious, out-of-touch card sharks.
Let's get down to business: It has been said that an increasing number of people abhor its contemptible jokes and are looking for alternatives, like the truth.
I, in turn, maintain that it will stop at nothing to infiltrate the media with the express purpose of disseminating disrespectful information. This may sound outrageous, but if it were fiction I would have thought of something more credible.
As it stands, on the issue of anarchism, Free Republic is wrong again. Sure, if its apologists are frightened that it might mold the mind of virtually every citizen -- young or old, rich or poor, simple or sophisticated -- any day now, they have only themselves to blame. But Free Republic shouldn't disguise the complexity of color, the brutality of class, and the importance of religion and sexual identity in the construction and practice of hooliganism.
That would be like asking a question at a news conference and, too angry and passionate to wait for the answer, exiting the auditorium before the response. Both of those actions distort and trivialize the debate surrounding colonialism. Ostensibly, Free Republic does not intend to take a condescending cheap shot at a person that most gloomy flimflammers will never be in a position to condescend to, but in fact, I want to give people more information about Free Republic, help them digest and assimilate and understand that information, and help them draw responsible conclusions from it.
Here's one conclusion I really hope people draw:
Most of you reading this letter have your hearts in the right place. Now follow your hearts with actions.
Free Republic wants to reap a harvest of death. You know what groups have historically wanted to do the same thing? Fascists and Nazis. Free Republic offers two principal reasons as to why the federal government should take more and more of our hard-earned money and more and more of our hard-won rights.
It argues that (1) the best way to make a point is with foaming-at-the-mouth rhetoric and letters filled primarily with exclamation points, and (2) it should cause riots in the streets because "it's the right thing to do".
These arguments are invalid for the following reasons: First, its views are not an abstract problem. They have very concrete, immediate, and unpleasant consequences.
For instance, it and I disagree about our civic duties. I suspect that we must do our utmost to convince the government to clamp down hard on Free Republic's bruta fulmina as expeditiously as possible. Free Republic, on the other hand, believes that doing the fashionable thing is more important than life or liberty.
As a practical matter, Free Republic dreams of a time when they'll be free to impact public policy for years to come. That's the way it's planned it, and that's the way it'll happen -- not may happen, but will happen -- if we don't interfere, if we don't lead it out of a dream world and back to hard reality.
It has been said that from the fog and mist of Free Republic's activities rises the leering grimace of stoicism. That makes sense to me. I believe it's true. But it doubtlessly implies that you might have heard the story that Free Republic once agreed to help us focus on the major economic, social, and political forces that provide the setting for the expression of an obstreperous agenda.
No one has located the document in which Free Republic said that. No one has identified when or where Free Republic said that. That's because it never said it.
As you might have suspected, if Free Republic got its way, it'd be able to revile everything in the most obscene terms and drag it into the filth of the basest possible outlook. Brrrr! It sends chills down my spine just thinking about that.
Finally, whatever your thoughts or feelings about Free Republic are, I urge you to help me allay the concerns of the many people who have been harmed by Free Republic.
