Poll question: Should I cash the check? |
|
I got a check from the local medical foundation for $324. Alls it says on it is "Refund". I have no idea why they sent it or what it's for. It's possible that it's a deserved refund for any number of things, but I really don't recall anything in particular that it could be for.
So should I go through the pain of contacting accounts payable and figuring it out, or should I cash first and let them ask questions later?
It'd be handy in helping to pay property taxes...

1. I would call and ask them about it |
|
I work in the health industry and we have had cases where people get refunds when insurance came back and paid for something that was initially declined--and the patient had already paid for it.

2. I would call and get it figured out |
|
It might come in handy now to use for taxes, but the other side of that is if you end up having to pay it back, it could come at a very bad time. If it is not yours and you take it, it is bad karma. Anyway, that is what I would do.

3. Check the Back of the Check for any fine print. |
|
It may say Refund on the back, but contain a small 'contract' on the reverse; by signing it and cashing the check, you may be agreeing to Buy something, possibly of a revolving-charge nature.
Or, if there's no fine print, and you're not entitled to the check and you do cash it, there's a legal principle called "Unjust enrichment" and you could be liable for the amount or more.

there's not even any small print. It looks like a totally legit check, and I think I figured out what it might be for.
Still, I'll call to make sure, as long as they don't send me through 500 hoops. Of course they're closed already today.
Feh!

4. a fairly new collection trick is to mail a check |
|
you cash it off your bank account and than they put a levy on your bank account for whatever you owe. look for fine print.
