My mom had picked out the name Joseph Paul. Surprise, she got a Jen! Then she tried to give me the middle name Joe Ann (yes, with the "e" and two words) but the person who filled out the certificate just put Anne, with the "e". Bah, perhaps someday I'll probably take that name back :-D

or "Shaniya" or etc., then, no, of course I wouldn't consider such a name.
But if it's something unusual, but sensible, like "Moon" or "Star" or "Ventricle" or "Wippet" or something, then that's totally cool.

Kids, these days, have enough problems, with the reinstatement of the draft, global warming and a state of constant war. They don't need to have silly names, on top of all this. And the names I have heard people giving their kids are just short of criminal. Why saddle a kid with a name that he has to live down? I'm not talking about family or ethnic names, which he will come to value, but these half-assed, misspelled, efforts just to find some misbegotten moniker that no one else will ever have. There's a good reason for that.:-(

Lucifer was originally the most beautiful angel in heaven, before he blotted his copybook.
My copy of Paradise Lost has a picture of 'Lucifer in his original glory' on the front.
It is a pretty good name in itself, but a sure-fire cause of bullying at school; and some very dodgy connotations.

Children need names that will work for them as adults. They need names that will allow them to be taken seriously. We plan on giving our children traditional names, probably named after grandparents. I feel this way despite the fact that I do like the sound of some more unsuaual names.

|
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 12:41 PM by LosinIt
The kid that always had frogs in his pockets. My husband sprung this one on me and I thought he was nuts, but I went with it. Our Arliss is indeed a unique individual and everybody knows him by just that name. He has served as dorm president and president of his college's chapter of the Wildlife Society (I think that is the organization). So I guess it didn't hold him back.
It's not considered such an odd name anymore since the HBO series by that name, but in 1983 it turned a lot of heads.

I think the latter is just a pain for the kid. S.O.'s nephew's girlfriend named their kid "Rion". Now what the hell is that?
It's not different, it just says "my mother can't spell". Nobody on my SO's side of the family knows whether the kid's name rhymes with Ryan or Dion.

55. Unusual, definitely. Absurd, no. |
|
I was given an unusual name. I didn't like it - not because it was unusual, but because it represented someone else's interpretation of who I was and should be. So I selected my own name - equally unusual, if not more so. I'm big on individuality, and I love names - for pets, for characters, what-have-you. A name should mean something, stand for something. It's not that difficult to find something that's both unique, accoustically pleasant, and meaningful.
