WTF is cowbell?

I am totally not getting the reference.

I know there is a flower called a "cowbell."

2. Slow moving (stupid bovines) have bells on them for easier location...

They became a 'thing' 10 or so years ago. There are now websites devoted to the diff. types of cow-bells, and their $$worship.

at least that is the German translation. It is a bell cows wear when they are in the fields, esp. in the mountains

5. OK I knew what a cowbell was before this post

I just want to know why some DUers are calling for more cowbell, it has got to be a reference to something that I may be too old to "get".

7. SNL skit with Will Farrell

they are doing a spoof of Blue Oyster Cult recording "Don't fear the Reaper" and the producer keeps saying "I need more cowbell" and Will is going nuts on the cowbell.
