Anyone here use a satellite Internet connection? |
|
I am thinking of switching to DirecWay (DirecTV) - I'm currently using dial-up and my only other option is satellite (I live too far out in the country for broadband, cable, etc.).
I had heard that downloading is a breeze, but that uploading via satellite is problematic.
I'd appreciate input from anyone more knowledgable on the subject than I.
Thanks.

1. i don't know much but here is what i have heard |
|
it's a bit expensive for what you get, but being that dial-up is the only alternative it might well be worth it.
i have heard too that the upload speeds are pretty poor.
at work i was attempting to get a remote employee setup up to connect through our VPN connection and it was was just horribly slow in that aspect. probably due to the poor upload limitations, i don't know.
my 2 cents, if you are desperate for a little more speed than dial-up and don't plan on connecting to your work place over the satellite connection, go ahead and get it.
Another person i work with who has satellite complains of frequent troubles that seem to be resolved by restarting equipment/calling tech support who he has trouble understanding.
that's about all i know about satellite.

2. Last time I checked , you still needed the dial-up part. You send |
|
in dial-up mode and receive by satellite. That's why I never bothered to get it. You don't upload via satellite. You can't get a transmitter that powerful.

I'll give my "friendly" DirecTV person a call and check out the upload issues.
I did notice that all the DirecTV literature gushes on about downloading, and nary a peep about uploading.
Hmmmmnnn.... :)
