Seriously, I was just checking the new releases on Netflix and thinking "No, no, no, no, no, no, no."

Hardly anything in my queue (34 titles as of right now) is a new DVD.

I scanned the movie showings yesterday to see what's in the theaters right now and didn't even recognize 3/4 of the titles.

16. same thing happens with literature
everyone remembers the halcyon days of yore, but only the good stuff survives, so we think that everything made back then was good. we never remember the crap.

think about it. most movies do suck. So say there are four a year made that you like. out of 500 or so. that means, since 1970, there are 150 movies you like. and from say, 1973, only the good ones are avaliable. So you don't remember the 495 bad movies made in 1973. se how that works?

18. true, but...
as the genre gets older there *are* more and more classics available.

Personally I don't understand why anyone who hasn't read the classics would buy a new book, unless they have way too much time on their hands.

2. I don't get many new movies on Netflix.
I like older ones, and TV shows. The boxed-set TV series are expensive--renting is the better way.

4. Most of them are going to suck until summer.
It's that period between the holiday season and the summer movies...most of them are mediocre.

6. I wondered if it wasn't just a cyclical thing
but DAMN these movies out now just suck.

I did just put "Saw" in my queue. I know nothing about it, but what the heck, I haven't heard anything bad at least.

5. I rarely get new movies from Netflix
I mean, I got The Grunge, but I packed that baby up and returned it before I even finished it because it was so bad.

My last 3 movies: Sgt Peppers, Seven and the new SpongeBob movie

8. The new Spongebob Movie was way better than I
thought it was going to be.

The Grunge was kinda bad. I watched the whole thing, but grew increasingly impatient with it.

I just sent back "Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Forum."

I'm seeing Netflix as a great way to see all the old movies I never saw. And like someone said above, all the great TV series I used to love that aren't on TV anymore (mostly British ones, but also things like "Strangers with Candy").

14. I have a ton of classic foreign flicks on my list
I'm going to do an "All Swedish" and "All Japanese" viewing sometime soon. And I swear I'm going to get "Birth of a Nation" " Triumph of Wills" and "Battleship Potakim" for an all Propaganda weekend.

Plus I've found some great documentaries!

7. In theatres, the time between
the Xmas holiday films and Easter are known as the time to "dump" films the studios feel are dogs and will do poorly at the box office any other time of year.

When "The Mexican" with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt was announced to be released during the dump months, I knew that is was going to be a dog. A good film with those two mega-stars should have been a high-profile summer release.

You will not be seeing many quality films until April (except at the art houses), so save your money and wait a bit.

9. I think the only film that might be decent that's coming out soon...
is Ron Howard's new one, "Cinderella Man" with Russell Crowe and Renee Zellwegger. Supposed to come out before summer, I think.

10. it's not just you, Bouncy Ball
I'm a movie buff - I go almost weekly to the regular theater or the dollar theater. Sometimes I have a hard time finding a good one and we are in a METROPLEX. Often I find myself "settling" on a so-so one. Still, I like the ones I've seen recently - Million Dollar Baby, Aviator, Finding Neverland, Ray.

19. hotel Rwanda is fabulous
i went with my 18yr old daughter and her b/friend. I felt so ignorant/ashamed when they asked me if I'd ever heard about it. I said no, that it was during the whole OJ thing and i had a toddler and didn't pay attention to world affairs then. I told them about what's going on in Darfur and now they have been talking about it amongst their friends and they're all wearing the bracelet from the savedarfur.org site and are trying to educate others in school about it.

13. They do. Look for movies from South America, Hong Kong,
and Canada. Okay, France and Italy too. They are so much better.

15. Saw a few Movies last year that didn't cuck
Finding Neverland
Garden State

Some I wanted to see I never got around to....

Most realy do suck....

It's hard to blend artistic flair with commercial interests. Always has been and always will....

Not DaVinci Art but just good competent non market based concepts that are kept pure from the touch of money.....

But alas, the true artist can rise above the whole messy afair and produce good stuff....

MEanwhile, I can't wait to see the next Vin Diesel Disney collaberation....

Is it me or is Disney in love with the whole idea of royalty......

17. Maybe the stuff coming out on DVD.
There DO seem to be a few good things coming to theatres. Although I suppose a lot of it depends on your taste, too.

21. There's good ones coming up
Maybe not "good" but "exciting."

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comes out in April, and that should be pretty entertaining, the new Star Wars movie opens in May.

Tim Burton has a new stop-motion movie opening in summertime. There's good ones/entertaining ones coming up, but yeah. Right now most of them are dogs.
