Would you believe, I'm doing ANOTHER '80s radio show on Friday?
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 09:31 PM by NightTrain
As you may recall, on Wednesday afternoon I filled in for the DJ at WHUS who does an '80s show. I hadn't been home from doing that show but two hours when my phone rang. It was the kid who does 1-4 p.m. on Fridays, begging me to fill in for him as he will be out of town. So I agreed. And since I didn't get the chance to refile the '80s vinyl and CD comps I had pulled for the Wednesday show, I figure I'll just play three more hours of '80s music.

Hey, why not? I never did get around to Sheena Easton, Michael Jackson, Eye To Eye, and Survivor. And I absolutely MUST give "Double Dutch Bus" a spin! :eyes:

1. I did an 80's show for two years in college
I was on the radio a lot, but nothing gave me the same pleasure as my 80's show.

7. That's the cast of "American Dreams"
My favorite show, and I'm trying to save it from the Nielsen bean counters at NBC.

7PM (MST/CST)/8PM (PST/EST)

6. Played to death on commercial radio.
But the group's other hit, "Pop Goes The World," never gets played!

Anyone remember that song from late 1988? Doesn't even sound like the same outfit that did "Safety Dance."

9. Possibly. WHUS reaches parts of the Ocean State.
The frequency is 91.7-FM.

If the air signal doesn't reach you, there's always our webcast, http://whus.org/listen.htm

11. And I'm doing one tonight!
Here's the link: http://www.ckuw.ca/listen.php

It's not strictly speaking an 80s show, but there'll be an awful lot of 80s stuff. Midnight to 3, CST. Listen if you can...

13. Suggestions, and a story.
These are a few that I think might have slipped under the nostalgia tier of 80's songs. Some are very good, and some are less good, but interesting as time capsule things. I'm leaving 1980 out of it, since most of the songs from that year much more closely resembled the 1970's (disco, soft country crossover, different synthetic sound, more stoned than ambitious).

867-5309/Jenny Tommy Tutone. When I was an intern, we used to play cruel games on each other by paging other interns to this number as soon as we suspected they either got home or got to sleep after a bad night. One poor fellow never got it. One day he went completely ape in rounds. The attending, after holding in his smile, suggested that it might have come from a different area code. Had the guy call six different 8675309 numbers in like five states. Since it had already been about 6 months, we finally decided to let him in on it. We paged him from a conference like five times, then when he came back in, we popped in a homemade vhs tape of the video spliced into some training flick.

-Who Can It Be Now?
-Der Kommisar. yeah, it was in The Wedding Singer, but go for it.
-Mr. Roboto. The undead rock opera to end all rock operas, and I think it succeeded.
-Delirious. This is the one Prince hit that never gets play.
-Break My Stride. Proved that acid trip songs only worked in the acid age.
-Somebody's Watching Me.
-Nightshift/ Commodores. Might be the best of the decade.
-Valotte. What happened to Julian Lennon after that?
-Hazy Shade of Winter, The Bangles. Probably one of the best 80's covers.
-Don't You Want Me/Human League. Here's relatively unmined 80's cliche.
-I'm On Fire/Springsteen. I didn't like him until I heard this one.
-Mickey. Truly the worst. Worse than Wham.
-Electric Avenue. One of the best.
-Our House/Madness, or One Step Beyond. Brits can be odd, too.
-Breaking Us in Two or Stepping Out. Joe Jackson.
-Girls with Guns. Earworm purgatory.
-One Night in Bangkok- earworm hell.
-Axel F. If I were the guy who wrote the music to "Moon Patrol", I'd sue.
-Come Dancing. The Kinks had a number of good and not-at-the-time-anachronistic songs in the 80's.
