Baseball players who use steroids...how stupid do they think we are? |
|
As far as trying to have us believe that they've never used them.
I've seen pictures of Sammy Sosa, for instance...and he's fucking huge. It's just...sort of obvious.
Ditto Mark McGwire. He was massive in size...and yet, apparently...no 'roids for Mark.
Do they think we're that gullible?

Nobody cared. Well, I cared....but then I'm one of those people who enjoy a 2-1 extra inning game. And steriods have no place in a 2-1 inning game.

3. One wonders why all the brouhaha... |
|
Professional sports is now entertainment. Why the pretense of a drug-free life? I mean, we know many pop culture icons use drugs and we might even believe, as perhaps they do, that such drug use enhances their performance, whether they're actors, comedians, musicians, song writers, etc. Such drug use seems to be OK in the entertainment industry, In fact, we've come to expect it.
So why are pro sports any different? I remember when atheletes were role models for boys: early to bed, no drinking or smoking, no women. But that all changed with Joe Namath of the NY Jets (remember "Broadway Joe?"). What he did pales in comparison with today's athelets.
So if an athelete's performance is enhanced by drugs and we find such performances even more entertaining, why the brouhaha if they do?

4. wow, you could have written the liner notes for "juiced" |
|
are you Jose Canseco? :P seriously, it's because in baseball, more than any other popular american sport, there is a sense of history, and that sense is often relayed via records/statistics. people shamelessly jacking themselves up on roids to break those numbers betray the sense of history that means so much to so many fans of the game (not the casual fans who are just looking for homeruns above all else).

6. The whole country had a "sense of history" |
|
We were the quintessential democracy; we were the "free world" We were on the side of "liberty and justice" for all. "Human rights" was our middle name. We were on the cutting edge of "The Enlightenment."
The Election of 2000, and ensuing events, changed all that.
So why's baseball any different?
But I see your point. I played organized sports from age 8 to 18: Little League baseball (4 years); Pop Warner football (3 years); on the high school track team (polevaulter, 2 years); and played college handball (1 year), so I really do understand your concern. I attended several (different) sports events each year growing up, and I too saw the importance of athletes as role models and the "sense of history" involved. But that all changed with the emergence of "free agents" and TV contracts. I just figure its all part of the entertainment industry so do the old rules still apply?

10. Drug Use Okay in the Entertainment Industry? |
|
"drugs make me more creative"
Bullshit.
Drugs enable a creative person - any person - to bypass whatever filters (mental, emotional, societal) that are holding them back from being creative. Learn to lose those filters on your own and no drugs will be required.
Drugs are especially great for entertainment industry executives and other entertainment-support industry-types to get an artist to sign a sheet a paper that's not in their best interests, or in other ways allow their personal boundaries to be violated in ways that a "normal" person would tell someone to go take a hike over.

5. There are other non-illegal supplements they could have taken |
|
Creatine, andro (only illegalized last year), and who know whatever crap in those bottles sold at GNC type stores.

11. That's part of the problem. No one tests supplements to see what they do |
|
The FDA doesn't run studies showing what these various supplements do, let alone what they are capable of doing when taken simultaneously with other supplements.
We honestly don't know if such results are possible taking multiple supplements and working out who knows how many hours a day under the supervision of a personal trainer.

13. i'd argue that those supplements simply are not powerful enough |
|
to let the body recover quick enough to work out like one would need to work out to build that kind of mass day after day, week after week, month after month.

And during the press conference he held in spring training, he has the balls to call the fucking PRESS the liars.

15. my hope is that the hall of fame voters stand up |
|
and refuse to accept any of these obvious steroid users (Bonds, Mac, Sosa, Palmeiro, etc) into the hall. it will probably be the only sort of justice left after this "cleaning up the game" circus that will only work to protect owners' and players' pocketbook.
Good enough for Pete Rose, good enough for the steroid abusers.

16. MLB has devolved to the status of "professional wrestling." |
|
Hell, I've been pissed at them since the baseball strike. I wouldn't care if the whole damn thing disappeared.
And can anyone tell me why baseball is a political issue? Aren't there other things which need investigating?
