I'm still on dial up, and the music is loading slow. That poem is good, but cryptic to me. Did you write it?

15. Yes I wrote that.
I wrote it on September 12 2001. I started it at 10 PM and finished it at 10:30. I had that poem in my head ever since I saw the picture of a flag hanging from a Street light, and in the back ground there was a badly damaged pumper truck still pumping water. It struck me that, that truck was still trying to fight the horror that happened that day. And the flag was there supporting it.

Would you care to share with the other people on this board, like me, who have not been around as long as you, how you got to where you are today?

Thanks,

21. How have you come to be a Systems Operations Specialist?
What was your path? What brought to that chair? What brought you to this job?

22. Well ( and this is the short version)
Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 02:42 AM by texas1928
The path to my job, was pretty much brought on by my chair. I wanted to be a police officer, or fireman. I have wanted to be one since I was a little kid. I was looking at the Navy in High School and then I got hurt. So I had to rethink my path. I started in college as a business major, but was bored to tears with it. I switched to criminal justice with a minor in business. I had talked to CIA and FBI about working for them. I was playing wheelchair basketball for the University of Texas at Arlington, and I blew out my tendons. So I had to quit that. Due to the fact that my tendons can not really heal since I use my arms all the time. I moved home to save money and about that time my health insurance under my dad ran out, so I had to get a job that I could afford to go to school on and also have SSI, since I had no health insurance. I hated being on government aid. I started working for Target as a customer service specialist. I worked for them for three years, I met my wife at work there. I lost my job due to the fact that I was starting to get sick from a bone infection, and they fired me since I was missing so much work. My wife and I were married in August of 1995 and in December of that year, I was in the hospital to have 7 inches of my femur removed. I got out of the hospital and got a job with Sitel selling long distance service for GTE. This was 1996, I was still not gaining weight from my illness in 95. I went from 190 pounds of muscle to 120 in two months when I went into the hospital in 95. I woke up one morning in August and I was bleeding out of the side of my leg. The nitwit plastic surgeon who had repaired the muscle and skin did not suture the muscle right and it had pulled apart and I had reacquired the bone infection. I was in the hospital having my leg amputated for our 1st wedding anniversary. Well Sitel had to have me quit since I had not been with them long enough to get short term disability and since I had been working I could not get on medicaid again.

Needless to say I came out of the hospital broke. The Hospital covered the cost of my surgeries and I did not have to pay them but I had to pay the doctors. came to 15,000. Sitel allowed me to come back at my normal salary, but that was not much. In 1997 the company went around and asked everyone who had been there a year and had not promoted to raise their hands. Everyone who did, me included, were fired in about a month. Well the job market in texas at the time sucked thanks to you know who. And San Angelo, TX. was the worst place to try and find a good job. My In-laws had moved to San Diego in July in 1997, and we had hit rock bottom and were about to have to move out of our apartment. They helped us move out there and helped us get back on our feet. Cox had positions open for Technical Support for their internet service and I applied. They took me due to my customer service background.

I enjoyed the job. The HR manager in San Diego had been the HR manager for the West Texas system and she knew I was interested in moving back to Texas. Well Texas was about to launch internet and their tech support department, and they needed experience. She asked if I would be interested in moving. I said sure. It was 40% cheaper to live in Texas than in San Diego. Well I got here and I had to basically be the go to guy for everything dealing with internet. So this last year they created the SOC positions and moved me into it.

That is my story.

24. Oh that is half of it.
I have ridden bulls, green broke horses, worked cattle and sheep. If I was not in a chair I would have a trick knee (Football injury + jealous suitor of a girl I was dating). I want to own a bull and horse ranch one day.

27. Oh my dear!
That is one helluva story! I hardly know how to respond...You have truly prevailed against overwhelming odds. Thank God your inlaws were able and willing to help. I can see your wife truly loves you, since she stood by you through all this. Judging from what you've said recently, in your posts to me, your job looks good and you're secure. It's so scary not to have health insurance at any time, and especially when you're suffering because of the incompetence of your doctor!

I salute your bravery and strength! Thank you so much for taking me into your confidence...I feel privileged to be there.

13. A Near-Operatic Scale of Illness
Mostly my kidneys are failing. Not on dialysis; my prognosis on dialysis is very, very, very poor so I'm avoiding it as long as possible. I'm B-, so my chances of getting a kidney are roughly equal to those of Bush telling the truth.
