I will have to say "Supper's Ready". "Firth of Fifth" was pretty cool too. I liked "Dance on a Volcano" and "Turn it On Again".
They had some good songs back in the day.

A lot of their music was out when I was about 2, so I have had to listen from a retro perspective.

And while I like Genesis stuff better with Gabriel, I admit I discovered Genesis during Phil Collin's era. I thought he did some good stuff with them, just not as totally whacked out as Gabriel. But then, I could listen to Gabriel's solo stuff for that.

Along with "I Know what I Like", those were their best funny songs.
"Jesus He Knows Me" was pretty spot on with all these televangelist types.

11. "Behind The Lines" from "Duke" |
|
I held the book so tightly in my hands, I saw your picture, heard you call my name There was something strange, I could not look away I wanted to be there, I wanted to go
You gave me no warning You gave no reason But I was with you Right by your side Just give me the strength, and I will help you And they can try their hardest, cos they don't frighten me
It is written in the book
It is hotter than I've known before, but I feel so cold, and I don't know why But if the fire within your heart can beat the storm Then I really believe, you could make it right
Ooh the time has come now We must show our feelings But I'm looking right through you And your heart is empty
Whatever happened to you it's too late to change now There's nowhere you can run to, no place to hide Ah you let me down!
...but wait a minute, I don't understand It's getting stronger, so grab my hand Don't wanna leave you, don't wanna go But I'm losing all control Can't you see me? I'm slipping away I can only stay if you've the will to keep me here
It is written in the book
Oh so many times since I've read those words Just waiting to see you, can you see me?

Phil was just more of the "bloke" type of guy next door. Peter was that interesting, introspective, different kind of guy.

They didn't do too many romantic type songs, but the few they did were good. "Afterglow" is another that comes to mind.
on edit: I can't believe I used you're instead of your. that bugs me!

|
Peter Gabriel's concert will always stand out in my mind as spectacular. It was audio/visual candy, nothing like I have ever seen, or will ever see.
Phil can play some drums. I still wish I had seen Genesis when I had the chance.

Seven Stones, off Nursery Cryme.
I too vastly prefer the Peter Gabriel era, but I think it's too easy to say that he was the real talent in the band; it's well known that Tony and Mike wrote a lot of the early good stuff such as "Watcher."
But they really did peak early-- Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot are IMHO far and away their best work, when they were grappling with the Big Issues and the myths that underpin Western civilization. Maybe it was the fervor of youth, or the active encouragement of their Friars fan base. Maybe they weren't full of themselves yet. (Why did they ever let Tony Banks make solo records?)
All I know is, I wish I could find somebody new writing songs with the scope of "Watcher," or even somebody old who hasn't forgotten how.

From "A Lamb Lies Down On Broadway".
Phil was okay, but it was REALLY Genesis back when Peter Gabriel was lead.
As far as I'm concerned, when Steve Hackett left, that was the end of the group.

Favorite political song: "Land of Confusion"--which seems to be really approp, given the freepers are worse than in Reagan's time.
