It's all about "advancing the agenda." You pay some blowhard to write a book with the "appropriate" viewpoint, you buy up a zillion copies so they end up on the bestseller list, then because they are on the list, they get invited on the talking head shows to spew their vitriol upon us unsuspecting viewers. Once the point is made, again and again, on TV, they give the books away as party favors at fundraisers, and dump the rest on the rightwing sites, or as "premiums" for subscribing to their shitty magazines.

The book is just a vehicle for the shill--the money he or she gets for writing it is really a bribe to tow the party line. And by writing it, the shill increases his or her profile by going on TV and talking garbage. It's a circular thing, it feeds on itself!
