favorite sports movies?
mainstream, obscure, unknown, unusual...

my husband is a "sports movie" fanatic. the sport does not matter. most often the quality of the movie does not matter.

i have explained that while i love the titans, and would give any given sunday, and keanu as a black quarterback etc etc...

...i just cannot watch these movies over and over and over again.

please give me your 'sports movie' suggestions.

15. Brian's Song
that is the kind of movie i like. with a story and all that. (a very touching story.)

Brian's Song would probably be the most male/female unifying sports movie ever...

It's a true story about a scandal that nearly killed professional baseball.

It stars John Cusack.

7. Visionquest
Visionquest - great wrestling movie IMO. I believe this is also Madonna's first appearance on the silver screen

Hoosiers - Gene Hackman is just so great in this

One on One - college basketball movie from the late 70s. Robbie Benson is in this one I think.

Rudy - everybody knows this one, right?

14. James Cann version of Rollerball.
But only if you're willing to handle something weird, quite dated, and about far more than just a sport.

In this day and age where people demand constant stimulation in movies, Rollerball has a lot of quiet scenes. It's odd that this movie, which was almost banned due to it's violence at the time it was released, is now tame and quiet enough to put many people to sleep.

But if you pay attention, it has undercurrent themes that I find riveting.

If that's too much, I also love "A League of Their Own." Great, funny flick that I suspect a non-sports fanatic spouse might enjoy.

Good luck!

29. Maybe you're thinking Roller Derby?
Rollerball was a movie. Two of them, actually.

The first was made in the mid 70's, starring James Cann. It was nearly banned for what at the time was extreme violence, and nearly was forced to take on an X rating for the same reason. The violence it contains is about on par with one of todays action movies, and pales in comparison with a slasher/horror flick. It actually has more to do with the movies setting within a corporate totalitarian state and the threat to that state posed by a player who excells at the sport of Rollerball.

The second movie was made more recently, and was a humongous box office flop. I haven't bothered to see it yet.

Roller Derby is an existing sport, considered by many to be on the same "level" as pro-wrestling. It was quite popular in the 60's and early '70s, mostly died out, and has recently, I've heard, begun reviving itself. To tell the truth, I really don't know much more about it than that.

I love the original rollerball, which is why I was so pissed of when once again, people decided to remake a classic.

When I was a kid I loved the mighty ducks movies.

Oh and Mike Basset, England Manager (dont know if this was released in America)

Oh and the legend of Bagger Vance, Caddy Shack, Happy Gilmore and the Waterboy.
