Computer question on IP addresses |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 01:05 PM by Blue_Roses
How can I find out who the IP address is when it attempts to access my computer? My security is catching them, and giving me the IP address numbers, but not the name. I would like to know where these IP addresses are originating from.

Reverse DNS lookup at http://dnsstuff.com.For instance... DU's reverse DNS... http://dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=216.158.28.198On edit: There are, of course, other tools out there and there are ones you can download and use but this one does the job.

4. There are various tools for this |
|
You can look up basic information at www.whois.net . Or you could toss the questionable IP to some of us computer geeks and let us dig up what we can.

I probed the first IP. It turns out to be a web server. Run by the Chinese Gov. I can't read Chinese but it seems to report the IP of the system visiting its site.
It also has an FTP port open as well and a few other ports. On its own nothing too interesting. It may be a data collector or a spider server. In which case its just a spider crawling around your ip looking to see if you had a web site. Nothing threatening in that. Best bet is to have someone that reads Chinese look at the site and see what it is.

9. Zone Alarm will block it, then tell you who it was. |
