...this is where I disagree with WillPitt: whether or not something is a big story is not up to him, or me, or DU.

While I do think that it's tragic that this is a big story, and shows simply unfathomable stupidity by the fundie sheeple and unfathomable hypocrisy (or, bad maneuvering?) by the Theo-cons -- this IS a big story. And the fact that this is a big story is a big story in itself; there are all kinds of implications to the fact that of all political bones to chew, of all judicial confrontations they could pick, the Theo-cons picked this one. And made it into a big story. To me, the story here is not Schiavo or Michael or her parents or the state of her brain -- the story is that this IS a story! The story is that they're setting up precedents in the way they're treating the judiciary. The story is "what exactly are they trying to do with this"?

I've argued in my posts that the debates about whether she'll wake up, or how Michael treated her, are totally missing the point. When there's a family dispute, courts resolve it -- and they have. The fact that the Bushies are using this as a trial balloon for a de-facto cancellation of the judicial system IS a big story.

Whether something is a big story or not isn't a qualitative judgement, but an empirical one. I think it's self-contradictory to hide a million threads because you don't think something's an important story -- the fact that politically-aware people on a political website are starting 1000 threads about something is an emprical proof that something is a big story. You can choose to ignore it if you want, but to be an absolutist and say "this SHOULDN'T be a big story" is indefensible, methinks.
