Poll question: Which of these songs screams "RAWK!" most to you?
I'm writing a thing for my friend's zine that tries to pin down just what it is about rock n roll that makes me go weak in the knees, and I came up with a short list of rock songs that I think most speak to that feeling, and picking one to be the one I deconstruct to try and explain it. Right now I'm leaning towards "Rumble" but I'm open to use another one on the list.

1. "Spread it Around," by The Bags!!!
Man, some tough choices there. Stooges... I'd say 'Search and Destroy,' even though it's a bit of a cliche. (I'm a street-walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm/I'm the runaway son of the nuclear a-bomb.)

7. I GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS! = ROCK!
I still contend that this song invented punk and metal all in one fell swoop.

34. i have a
I have a couple of friends who, years ago, went to a mm show because they had heard they might play some boc or maybe it was that one of the mm was a boc fan, and came away convinced the MM were the saviors of rock, and then proceed to devour anything MM. I was too busy with little kids to pay attention at the time, but my time is my own now, I should track some down, and give a listen. I sure like the influence.

18. Nope, it's RAWK.
'Rock' just doesn't cut it--unless it's paired with the prefix 'super'--as in Super-Rock. Actually, it's a pretty common spelling amongst garage/punk/psych afficionados.

20. I have a radical idea

How about calling the music ROCK & ROLL?

Granted, that's an extremely bizarre suggestion, but why not give it a try? Who knows, y'all might just like it!

official recorded output. Now, those bootleg videos of live shows are another matter entirely...

runnerup: The Stooges' "Loose"

26. SHAKE APPEAL!! But Raw Power is great, too...
All good pics, by the way. I don't often come across a DU poll in which I'd select "all of the above", but this is one.

I also enjoy Jesus Lizard's version of "Sunday You Need Love", because it's absolutely the most rawking slide guitar solo ever recorded.

Also see: "Top Fuel", by the Dijits, and "Coma America", by Amen

Either that or "TV Eye" by the Stooges; that fucking yell that opens the song, then the yelp that follows the entrance of the guitar, never fail to get me out of my chair and dancing up and down!

29. Now that I think about it...
The Birthday Party do a killer version of the Stooges' "Loose". It's awesome, and includes Nick Cave's gutteral "LOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRDD" at the end of it, where TV Eye would pick up on the LP.

32. Other List
Beatles - REVOLUTION single - John's amazing vocal, that overblown overdriven guitar, "Don't you know its gonna be all Right"

McCartney JET - amazingly poetic lyrics about a lover who won't take risks for love, driving bass line.

Gang of 4 - I FOUND THAT ESSENCE RARE - just a beat that kills me, makes me want to jump up just thinking about it. I just revisited all my Gang of 4 vinyl. . .boy did they RAWK!

Stones - JUMPING JACK FLASH - It's a gas gas gas.

Bowie - SUFFRAGETTE CITY
