A Serious Post About Taco Cabana |
|
I ate there for the first time in years and years, today. I was surprised at the contrast between Taco Cabana and the "other big three" in my city, meaning Taco Bell, Taco Bueno and Taco Mayo. I would also include most of the other Mexican restaurants. The seasonings were totally different.
The refried beans had a real dominating smoked flavor, and not much of anything else. I was impressed by how hot they were.
The guacamole was a little bland, and had fibers in it, which I hope were from the actual avocado.
The meat in the beef enchiladas was not of great quality. I got a couple of pieces of grissle, which I cannot stand.
The rice was also bland, but it appeared to have fresh, mild peppers in it.
The chips tasted good, and they included both white and red corn. But the red chips were SO RED, I question whether or not they contained red dye. The flavor of the red chips did not differ from the flavor of the white chips.
Overall, the food did taste very fresh, though.
I don't know.

I'd say it's better than average if average is Bell, Bueno, Mayo.
If you have an Atomic Burrito in your area, try it. Blows the rest away.

4. The Taco Cabanas here are so good, I find them to be |
|
addictive to the point that I have to stay away.
That being said, authentic, non fast food Tex Mex is so easy to come by there's no excuse for fast food Tex Mex most of the time.
What's Taco Mayo?
And yes, I would bet my arm they use red dye in the chips, of course.

6. Taco Mayo is about on a par with Taco Bell |
|
It is very tasty, but not necessarily healthy. It is cheap, too.

I'm very picky about my Mexican food, being of that heritage myself, and TC is great. In my opinion, one of the biggest things that sets them or any good Mexican food apart is the quality of the tortillas. At places like Taco Bell, they're awful... I can't identify the exact taste, but they definitely don't taste like any real tortillas I've ever had. And I should know, my grandmother used to make them from scratch for me when I was little. At Taco Cabana though, they're hot and fresh and everything good tortillas should be. And the rest of the food ain't bad either. :9
Of course, we are talking fast food here, so I'm grading them on a curve.

12. Here we have so many hispanic immigrants (25% of pop.) in my town |
|
that we have kick-ass mexican restaurants. There is a Taco Bell here, but I don't know how they stay in business.
