I too am offended when Jesus is disparaged |
|
but I try to be a grown up about it.
There are lots of atheists here. And I need to respect their beliefs as well as my own.
If a thread title really offends me, I either won't post in it, or I will take the light hearted approach.

Whatever the reality is it will survive all of our errors.
It hurts when people disparage me for whatever, but I figure "God" can take it.

That's why I don't disparage atheists. Respect is a two-way street.

6. Jesus is disparaged every time a conservative claims to speak for him... |
|
And says something hateful, intolerant or untrue.
You can't be a Christian and a conservative at the same time.

My brother and I have both been told (by fundies, of course), that one cannot be liberal (or a Democrat) and be a Christian.

being a Republican and a Christian
The core value of Republicans is wealth/money, and I don't see how that fits very well with Christianity.

21. I'm pretty much a godless heathen |
|
but I would never disparage Jesus, or Mohammed, or Bhudda, or any of them. It's only a large segment of their followers (well, not so much Bhudda's) who deserve disparagement.
I guess that's all fairly obvious, by now. Happy Easter Midori! :hi:

26. I grew up a fairly conservative protestant |
|
and the thing I've learned that sometimes you have to have a sense of humor in many aspects of your life, religion included. That doesn't mean you can't have deeply held beliefs. I'd like to think God has a sense of humor. It's a part of the human psyche. To me joking about religion strips away some of the pretentiousness and makes it more human. Telling the old Good Friday joke doesn't mean that you don't believe. Quite the opposite.

Read the thread title, then decide if you want to enter or not.
If someone posts "Howard Dean is our best hope for the future," you have to decide if you're going to enter the discussion or not. But if you hate Howard, and post "Howard is a douchebag," you are disrupting a thread, and offending Dean supporters. If you loathe Howard, you are entitled to your opinion. But you really can't blame the Dean supporters if you have personally disrupted the thread yourself. And it would not be unusual for your post to be deleted.
That being said, I have seen many times when a discussion of Christianity is disrupted by someone saying "it's a mental illness, and those who follow it are deranged." Most of the time, I ignore it. But I get sick of the "Fuck Jesus Shit." That's just plain offensive to me.
Believe me, the last thing I want to do is argue about religion. I am happy to explain what I believe, if people ask me. However, I have been called "intolerant", "rude," and "hypocritical" by people who were NOT having a little fun (this was a while back, in GD, NOT here in the Lounge). They were attacking me, as well as my beliefs. God may be able to take it, but I'm a bit more fragile.
As someone wrote above, "it cuts both ways."

33. If you have a friend who is always there for you, |
|
to comfort,to advise, to share grief and joy throughout your lifetime, you get a bit sensitive when someone starts throwing crap at them. This is a very personal friendship, and I don't turn my back on my friends. I agree, God may be able to take it, but you will have to go through me to kick Him.

36. Really shrill anti-religious people are part of the Republican strategy. |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 09:24 PM by LoZoccolo
Think about it: Republicans talk about this culture war and how it should be fought on government turf. A bunch of people on our side take the other side of that, allowing the Republicans to fight according to a strategy they picked as a way they think they can win. It's a ridiculous thing to try to imply that the Democratic Party is anti-religion, even if you are yourself.
