Don't knock people who piss and moan, read below. |
|
An elderly lady contacted her telephone company to report that her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions when it did ring, her pet dog always moaned right before the phone rang. The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile elderly lady. He climbed a nearby telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house. The phone didn't ring right away, but then he heard the dog moan loudly and the telephone began to ring. Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found: 1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire via a steel chain and collar. 2 The wire connection to the ground rod was loose. 3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the phone number was called. 4. After a couple of such jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate on the ground. 5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring. Which goes to show that some problems can be fixed by pissing and moaning.

5. I do not think the dog getting shocked is funny |

I think the whole situation, the phone company not believing anything is wrong was funny in the ironic sense...
True story to follow:
Our phone lines are all underground in our neighborhood. Every time it rained, my phone would not work, and I complained repeatedly over the course of 3 years. One of the times the phone company actually came into my house and checked all the extensions and told me that my problem was because of my answering machine (right after the phone company had launched the voice messaging in my area). I unhooked the answering machine (went without for awhile) and the phone still wouldn't work when it rained. I do not live in the desert, so I would be without service about 30 days a year.
Finally the phone company changed some of the wiring in the local trunk (after about my 50th complaint) and now it works like a charm.
