I saw the Mountain Goats play live last night
At a small venue in Oklahoma. Didn't even know they were coming into town until Friday night. It was a very fun show.

For any Mountain Goats fans who are wondering, the stuff from the new album that is supposed to come out next month sounded really good.

1. Was it just the dude solo?
Or did he have a band with him? I like the couple of releases I've heard...but I always thought it was just one person...

2. He's got a bassist at the moment
And they also played a few songs with the drummer from the opening act.

It's basically a vehicle for John Darnielle, and a lot of his songs over the years have just been him. But there are other songs that have other musicians.

3. I didn't even know he was touring!
Or is he not? Was this a one-off?

God, I fucking LOVE the Mountain Goats.

5. He mentioned other stops
so I guess it's something of a tour, but I couldn't find any information about it on Pollstar, which doesn't list except for two in late April. I didn't hear anything about it until I happened to pick up the school paper on Friday afternoon. I'd've been quite bummed had I missed it :)

He said they'd been in Lubbock the night before, so I suppose it might just be college towns. They're touring with a band called The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers.

It really was a great show. I'd never seen him before, but have been a fan for the last 15 months or so. I took along about eight or nine friends who I easily convinced of his genius by playing "No Children" at various parties over the weekend. :)

12. Thanks.
Looks like the closest they're coming to my town is Kalamazoo, so I'll probably be sitting this tour out.

4. How do they keep from falling off the side of the mountain?
They must have incredible balance...

and they manage to stay upright by following the veins of precious metals that run below the earth's surface. That's why, in the gold rush days, smart miners would immediately stake their claim and start digging whenever they saw a group of goats gathered together. :)

8. Ah, I suspected as much.
Didn't know about the gold, though...

7. I'm a gi-normous Mountain Goats fan,
and so am quite envious. Maybe he'll come this way, but I won't hold my breath. Hm. But a friend of mine knows Darnielle slightly, and maybe he can persuade him to come to town.

Glad to know there's a new album in the works, and that it sounds good.

Saw him (them) a couple years ago at a small venue here. Hope they come this way again soon.
