Falwell apologizes to gays, feminists, lesbians

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell said late Thursday he did not mean to blame feminists, gays or lesbians for bringing on the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington this week, in remarks on a television program earlier in the day.

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

Falwell, pastor of the 22,000-member Thomas Road Baptist Church, viewed the attacks as God's judgment on America for "throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked."

But in a phone call to CNN, Falwell said that only the hijackers and terrorists were responsible for the deadly attacks.

I wonder, what kind of god would blast 3000 people into applesauce to pay for the sins of society? And couldn't he be a bit more direct? And I don't mean send mother mary to go paste her face on another damn grilled cheese sandwich.

I'm talking Big Hollywood Production, you know, angels doing flyby shootings of evil bastards, really cool cloud formations, giant faces that look kinda like Wizard of Oz and George Burns had a kid spouting off bad poetry in the King James style, huge choirs singing, and a public execution of the nonbelievers. I'll volunteer to go first.

Because I sure as hell don't want a damn thing to do with that world, or with a petty deity who would kill 3000 people just to make a point. I mean, that's the kind of evill WE do to each other, for even less provocation, and you don't even have to die to meet those tyrants.

I distinctly remember that episode. He was forced to backpedal...furiously. Even Rush Limbaugh took him to task for that. The White House said his comments was "inappropriate"

Falwell was caught in a shitstorm of his own making. He was forced to apologize because of widespread public oondemnation. He wasn't in the least bit contrite about it.
