When Did Your Family First Get a Color TV? |
|
My family got ours in 1959 - only because my dad worked for RCA, and got it on Employee Discount. At the time, only two stations in NYC were broadcasting in color part of the time - WNBC (Channel 4) and WOR (Channel 9 - now Superstation WWOR).

My first color TV was when I was first married in 1971.

We were not well off, but that TV made me feel rich. I wanted so badly to watch "The Wonderful World of Disney" in color.

Prior to that he actually bought one of those things you pasted on the front of a black & white TV that made it "look" like a color TV.

17. That wasn't the NASA plan, though |
|
The cameras were lo-rez, though, at least one got burnt out, and the quality of the video sucked. It took several missions before they resolved those issues.
But the PROMISE, ahead of the event, was for color.

8. I was from a pretty poor hillbilly family. |
|
We did not get a color television untill like 1979. Not like there was anything to watch anyway, way up here back then you only got two(one was mostly preaching/church) channels, and theres still no cable.

Remember watching Walter Cronkite report Watergate every night... movies of the week, All In The Family, MASH, Odd Couple, etc...
And Saturday morning cartoons like Bugs Bunny!

1972 or 73
And we actually used the old Zenith BW into the early 80's as a second TV.

12. We had a color TV when I was born. |
|
That was 1966. We actually had TWO televisions - the color TV in the family room and the black and white in the living room.
My parents got an RCA television for their wedding in 1959. It was a console, black and white. It was a great TV, very well made. I used it in my first apartment in 1985, until I bought my own TV in 1986. I'm not sure what my folks wound up doing with the TV - I should have kept it - but it went at least 30 years.

being invited to another kid's birthday party in 1960 where the big draw was getting to watch a program in color.

I can remember watching the Apollo moon landing in black and white.
Those old 13 inch TVs from the 50s must have been immortal. It was still working when we gave it away to the trash collector. He asked if it was OK for him to keep it instead of putting it with the trash, and we said sure, that's why we didn't put it in the can.
The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists and other subversives. We intend to clean them out, even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country. --John Mitchell, US Attorney General 1969-72

but, it was older than that. My family inherited it when my Grandfather passed away.
Thing was the size of a small truck, ran on diesel and had a bakelite "rabbit ear" antenna the size of deer antlers sitting on top.
When it finally died (late 60's/early 70's), we upgraded to a TV that got UHF!
Big perk there... Professional Wrestling!
