I want to rant for a moment
Edited on Sun Apr-03-05 08:05 PM by chimpsrsmarter
I take my daughter out to get a new bathing suit today, she's 10 and a tad tall for her age, she's about 5 2 so it's getting a little harder to find a clothes for her that are age appropriate. We go to several stores and the choices for her in bathing suits are either---hoochy mama or old lady, same goes for clothes. the last store we went to was a surf shop where we finally found a stylish but modest suit, the cost? $85.

1. I understand what you mean and I know you paid a lot of money
for a bathing suit - but for $85.00, your daughter won't be spending the summer picking her suit out of her crack. I hope that's some consulation for you. :)

5. yes, you're right, it's a high quality suit but the selection even there
was small, i don't mind spending the money for the quality but i wish there were more choices. Of course i also talk her---"Don't be sitting on the concrete wearing that suit, it'll get pilly!"

4. a lot less for both
I went to Target and their suits were under $40 and Meryns were a little more but just as hoochy or ugly.

7. So what does this tell you?
Society either wants you to be a whore or an old lady.
What a shame.

I feel the extra money was worth spending since your daughter now won't look like a hoochie or an old lady.

9. 100% agree
Why do the parents let the kids wear those clothes?

My mom and I were at the mall the other day and we saw these two girls, if they were 10 that was pushing it, and each of them were babbling on their cell phone and the kicker (at least to me) they both went over to the ATM and got money out of the machine.
Their parents were no where to be seen, maybe they were elsewhere in the mall but still.

Maybe I'm old fashioned concerning kids but who the hell needs a cell phone and an ATM card at 10?????

Who the hell are they calling at 10 years old except thier mom or dad? The closet mall near me is about 45 minutes away, i used to hate that but now i'm pretty glad.

13. Do you live in a wealthy area? Many parents, rich and poor, equate
handing out cash with love. So many think they their kids should have EVERYTHING they did not when they were young.

15. i'd say middle class and you're right about the cash=love thing
we didn't have a whole lot growing up but i only have one kids and i don't want to her to be your stereo typical spoiled only child even though many only children aren't. I want her to value other things and in general she does, she has her moments but she's learned if she really wants something she has to earn it.

to be an extra small....I am tired of seeing young girls' tummies.

11. If you want more traditional and not slutty
try Lands End www.landsend.com

They have more age appropriate clothes. I am sure there are other catalogs that cater to kids in their "tween" years.

I have a similar problem: I am fat and it's either frumpy looking stuff or the trampy style sold at the Lane Bryant at the mall and I hate that stuff. I like preppy clothes so I buy from the men's department and buy Ralph Lauren polo shirts.

17. No, but most corporations are far from friends of working
people. I expect such things from corps so it does not surprise me.

They don't sell slutty clothes and if I had a kid I'd cloth him/her from lands end or llbean.

12. I can relate...
It's a challenge to buy clothes for my 12-year-old daughter that are stylish, but not slutty. Fortunately, so far she shows little interest in the prostitute look, opting for jeans, t-shirts and sporty clothes.

And what's with those slinky camisole tops that are so popular this spring? Sheesh! Last week I saw one cammy top in the junior department made with a silky and flimsy red fabric with black polkadots, black lace trim and spaghetti straps. Looked like something a saloon gal from a wild west flick would wear with black fishnet stockings and a garter belt.

For sure, there's a market for the type of clothes we and our daughters really want but usually can't find. Same with shoes. Once my daughter's feet grew past size 4 1/2, it's been very frustrating trying to find footwear that it appropriate for her age aside from athletic shoes and flipflops.

It was much easier (and more fun) shopping for her when she was a tot. Those days went by too quickly. *sigh*

16. I've had this problem too
It seems to be that way for all clothes, but with suits it is worse.
What puzzles me about swim suits is that it seems that most of the selection involves suits that one really wouldn't be comfortable swimming in. The suits that they sell at sporting goods stores that are good for swimming are around $80. Since my last suit turned out to be see through when wet, I might break down and buy a real swimming suit anyway.

18. From one mom to another...I feel your pain
Next time try Old Navy if you have one in your area. They have these great suits called Tankinis which are a modest bikini bottom and a tank-top like top. My daughter, when she was in the teenage years and even now, always liked them.

On the whole, I think Old Navy is a good choice as they have 'stylish' clothes and they aren't all hoochy momma. :)

In case you're interested, here's a link for their swimsuits. Have fun...you have many interesting years ahead of you.
