One more "Praise the Lord" and I may just turn completely |
|
anti-religion.
We hear it all the time here in KC. I was at HyVee having my breakfast and reading the Sunday paper and this "Praise the Lord" guy walked up and asked to see the sports page. Then he continued a conversation that included way too many "Praise the Lords' for me.
I would like to just be able to have a regual conversation about something normal without having to deal with the God thing. I'm sick of the pod people.

1. I agree when people use it as a way to end every sentence...like |
|
"I went to the grocery store today...praise Lord...and bought some cabbage...praise Lord..."

Rather than working hard and building a good credit, they just beg for money. Yeah, that's a great example for the kids. Here kids, don't work hard and save your money, just ask god for it.

9. Getting pretty sick of it myself. |
|
I had a woman where I used to work, where no matter what I said, happy or sad, EVERY bleeping thing out of her mouth was "I'll pray for you."
Is it just me, or is this just completely sanctimonious? Like this person has some sort of special "hotline" to God. PLEEEZ. You overestimate your own importance.
This woman was severely mentally disturbed. I couldn't even begin to recite her litany of problems. I'm so glad I'm no longer at that job, having to deal with her now, as I know she has probably become even more of a whackjob of the highest order, and in my present state of activism, I wouldn't even be able to be civil to her (and I was starting to get pretty curt with her when I was apolitical!)
I just wish people could be decent human beings without shoving God in your face every five minutes.

nerves too. I was phone banking the other day and someone had a message machine that said, "God bless you for calling. Please leave your message and have a prayerful day." I left my message asking them to vote no on the marriage amendment, wonder how they will vote? Around here if they speak like that the chances are pretty good they will vote to amend. You just can't get away from this stuff anymore.

(in Austin- Liberalville, ya know!)
used to have a message something like, "You've reached 'unnamed mechanic's' Auto Repair. Leave me a message. Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal saviour?"
He then proceeded to ramble on about Jesus. This was in the late 80s/early 90s and he was a decent mechanic, but he and my mom recently had a falling out.
She tried telling him once that he might be hurting his business by proseletyzing so much. He asked her what proseletyzing meant, then proceeded to say that it was a big part of his life, and that it was NOT hurting his business. Shah, whatever. Everyone wants to be preached to by their mechanic. :eyes:

17. It's about the same as "Allahu al akbar" every other phrase from Islamists |
|
A religious society that infuses its discourse with references to God is afraid of open exchange, and must inoculate every thought with superstition. The right wing is the right wing, all around the world.

giving thanks to their "Lord and Savior Jesus Christ"?
I'm sorry, I know it's petty and mean, but I just want to scream, "GIVE IT A REST!!!! JESUS DID NOT MAKE YOU WIN THIS BASKETBALL GAME!!!!"
I know I'm a bad person, but it's just a peeve of mine. :spank:

I heard an interview with Prince awhile back, and he did almost the same thing!
Every other phrase was "through the grace of God blah blah...." "Through the grace of God....blah blah."
Did God also think it was super cool when you replaced your name with a symbol that could have stood for something Satanic? Wasn't that NOT honoring your mother and father when you decided to dump the birth name they gave you?

20. Mary - you got that right... |
|
I am so sick and tired of people wanting to tell me "what happened at their church".
Unless there were strippers present, and they were slamming shots, and passing joints, I could care less "what happened at your church".
It's everywhere. "Inspirational" sections consume whole aisles in local grocery stores. Local TV carries hour long services from that vile "First Family Church" where thousands attend, and wave one arm in the air like they are trying to flag down a cab in New York City.
Commercials on television intrude during the few shows that I do watch, hawking CD's that contain the "most popular and beloved Christian artists playing your favorite Christian songs".
Please, enough.
Yesterday, I saw a car in a grocery store parking lot in Overland Park that had about three "Jesus" related bumper-stickers on it's ass end. It also had one of those insidious "VOTE: Marriage Act. One Man, One Woman" bumper-stickers.
I almost confronted the middle aged woman who was about to climb into the car as a made my way through the parking lot. Then I decided, why bother. It's a lost cause.
Pod People. Indeed.

29. I met our over the back fence neighbor... |
|
about two years ago while we were out at the same time.
He seemed friendly enough, but when he said they were having a BBQ that afternoon and were "having some friends from church over" I politely declined. I could only imagine the sore thumbs we'd stick out like. Not my idea of a good time.
Sad when I pre-judge everyone that way, but I'm happily agnostic, and don't feel like wasting my time socializing with people I have absolutely NOTHING in common with. It's our town environment (outside the Dallas Metroplex). If I want to socialize, I go to our local Democrat meetings. Nice food, nice friends, decent conversation. THAT'S where I meet my neighbors.

33. Something like that happened to me the other day, too! |
|
The office where I work got a new researcher, and when I was meeting her I was trying to make polite conversation, so I mentioned that I had been in Atlanta over spring break, which is when that courthouse shooting was happening. She was like "Oh, yeah, and that woman calmed that maniac down with "The Purpose-Driven Life"...my pastor was talking about that last Sunday at church, how we all need to bring Jesus into our lives...."
This is one of the most prestigious universities in the country, a liberal college smack in the middle of one of the bluest states around, and here this woman is talking about her pastor within, literally, two minutes of being introduced to me. I don't know why she would have felt like she needed to, but I was pretty weirded out by the whole thing.

I used to work with a woman who ended nearly every sentence with "God Willing". One day she said "see you tomorrow, God willing" and I replied "I plan to be here either way" her jaw almost hit the floor.
She avoided me after that.

The answers to the questions of our lives are in each one of us, not in some public display of piety.
