I'd like to take a song off a CD I own and convert it to mp3. I have no clue how to do it. When I did a search, I found all types of commercial software (with semi-large pricetags). Is there any good shareware/donationware/freeware?
Edited to add -- for Linux.

Get Exact Audio Copy and the LAME MP3 encoder (and use its --alt preset extreme setting) and you're set!
Not sure if they exist on Linux but they might.

4. As has been said, iTunes will do it for you |
|
or you can download the LAME encoder. Google the name.

5. iTunes can also rip in AAC format. |
|
Higher compression rate or something.
If you play it for a robot, he'll be able to tell the difference.

6. If you have a cd burner (which you'll need to do this)... |
|
...didn't it come with some kind of software? Itunes would be the way to go as far as free software.

7. I use the current version of Goldwave |
|
It's shareware, and comes with a batch conversion utility that allows you to pick the songs on a cd that you want and pull them off in one shot.

8. CDex or Exact Audio Copy (EAC) + Lame codec |
|
That's my recommendation.
