On This Day in Rock History. |
|
On April 4th, 1964, The BEATLES accomplished something that will never be equalled. They held the top 5 positions on the Billboard singles chart. 'Can’t Buy Me Love' was number 1 for its first of 5 weeks, 'Twist and Shout' was at number 2, 'She Loves You' dropped to number 3, 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' held at number 4 and 'Please Please Me' stayed at number 5.
In Canada they had nine of the top 10 singles.

5. These 5 songs were from several albums! |
|
From Please, Please Me to Can't Buy Me Love, a period of at least 2 years, several albums, and all hit here between Nov. '63 and April '64. I still can feel the electricity that was in the air. Our babysitter came over and was yelling "The Beatles are coming!" and was combing our hair into our faces. We spent days listening to Meet the Beatles over and over. Musta drove our parents nuts.

Just for you XNASA  1998 Eric Clapton's first album of regular studio material since 1989 makes an auspicious debut at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. "Pilgrim" (Duck/Reprise) ties the opening position of 1992's "Unplugged," which went on to reach No. 1.

11. 9 years between studio albums? |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 01:55 PM by XNASA
Well, in fairness, it's rumored that he actually wrote most of the material (unlike his other albums) so I guess that's why it took so long. It's also why "Pilgrim" is regarded by critics and fans alike as the worst EC album of all time.

10. All those singles were released in a deluge that won't be repeated |
|
Record execs these days are very jealous of sales and wouldn't want those singles to be competing with each other, let alone other releases of the label. You could say that the Motown house band the Funk Brothers has accomplished similar feats, but not the top five spots probably and certainly not as a single unit.
