Your favorite memory from childhood... |
|
Christmas Eve after church sitting around the Christmas tree with my parents and grandparents waiting for dad to finish traditional Christmas carols so that we could start opening presents that Santa put under the tree while we were in church. The lighting, the smells, the excitement, the love of family.

Just kidding.
There's too many. But one that sticks out right now would be Rocky Point park in OCtober when I was four.

4. Winning a little league championship |
|
Not because of the win but because at the beginning of the season my dad, who was the coach, said that if we came in first the team could cut his beard.
One of the perfect moments of my life was the trophy ceremony being delayed because the team was lined up in front of my dad waiting for their turn with the scissors.

8. Going fishing on the New River with my dad and grandfather... |
|
also, seeing Riva Ridge win the 1972 Kentucky Derby. If not for a rainy couple of days in Maryland he would have become the 9th Triple Crown winner, the first since Citation in 1948. And he was a Virginia bred.

9. I have the worst memory... |
|
...probably because I wasn't too happy until recently. Not a bad childhood, but I don't think I was happy. One of my earliest- and favorite- memories is a memory that is responsible for my love of NYC. I was walking down in Manhattan with my dad near his law office. I was 3 or 4, and wearing a dress. I can still smell the streets. But this memory always makes me happy. It's one of the few memories of my dad that does make me happy (I don't have a great relationship with my dad).

10. We had an old car that had holes in the floorboard |
|
in the back seat. The neighbor kids were teasing us that we were so poor we had holes in our car. So my sister and I went home crying. We were about 4 and 6.
My dad invited the kids who were teasing us to go for a ride in our car. So we all piled in and he made us all sit in the back seat. Then when we got about a block away from home, he told us to spit through the holes onto the street. We had so much fun that every time we went anywhere, those kids asked my dad to drive. And they never called us poor anymore.

12. My father worked during the days, mom worked nights. |
|
When I was a preschooler, he used to read to me. My favorite memory is of me dragging a pile of Dr. Seuss books to bed and begging him to read them to me. Although he was very tired, he would read every book until I fell asleep. I didn't realize it at the time, but eventually this taught me how letters sounded. Soon, I could link these sounds together into words. By the time I was four, I could read these books to him.

13. Visiting relatives on 2 farms in Wisconsin |
|
In the summertime. Cows, tire swings, milk with who knows what kind of butterfat content, venison fried up in a big cast iron pan, baby kittens in the barns, picking wild strawberries in ditches, catching fireflies at night. Well worth the longish drive from Minneapolis and a most welcome change from city life.

16. Sitting on the back patio with my Dad |
|
at night while he smoked a cigarette (I remember the orange glow) and he pointed out and explained all the constellations to me.
Or laying on the floor watching TV before dinner while I could hear my Mom cooking dinner and clinking the dishes and putting the ice in the glasses.

Dad made his famous peach ice cream using the old-fashioned crank handle ice cream maker...my neighborhood buddies and I caught (and released) lightning bugs, examined the four o'clocks growing along the back of our house and rolled in the grass delightedly.

I had a really great childhood, but favourite memories?
1) I was in first grade, my best friend was in kindergarten and our parents dropped us off at a horror movie - Mothra Vs. the Smog Monster or something. And we watched it, sucking the insides out of huge dill pickels with straws - which I still do. (A similar occassion - we watched a movie about a bunch of hippies who went off to an island, got stoned and then eaten by zombies, if anyone can tell me what that movie was I'll be eternally gratefull).
2) Me and my little sister making up an imaginary language to confound our parents. We even used it up until adulthood - it was OURS (damnit), it was about us and no one else could ever share that.
Khash.

22. Last day of 6th grade, 1971 |
|
Not sure if this is my favorite, but it stands out, even though nothing spectacular happened. It was just the perfect day in all respects--the sense of utter freedom stretching out in front of me, the perfect Southern California early summer weather, golden light slanting through green leaves, me and my older brother going wild with neighbor kids with squirt guns and everybody laughing 'til their sides hurt, my whole family there for a barbecue and everyone just seeming to feel so good--you know how kids can sense the good or bad moods of adults; my sense was that all the adults were in as good a mood as I was. A perfect day in so many ways.

24. Playing monster trees on a windy summer night |
|
We had a yard full of trees. And on certain summer nights, when the mood was right, the elm trees would become 'monster trees' and we would run around the yard and pretend the monster tree branches were trying to catch us. (Totally inspired by the Wizard of Oz.) The only way to save yourself from the monster trees was to go to the 1 of only 2 ash trees in the yard and ask for a magic wand to protect you.
Once you had a wand (Okay, it was really just a stick) you could free yourself or others from the branches of the monster trees.
We would get so wrapped in the magic of a late summer night and the blowing branches....
Those were special nights.
